Restoring /etc after I removed it.

Question:

AIX 3.2.5

I was trying to remove the /etc/lock directory, but I removed the
whole /etc directory instead by accident. Now my system is down
and I need help getting it back up and running. Can you help?
How do I restore /etc back?

Response:

Our game plan is to boot up into Maintenance Mode (MM) and
restore the /etc directory from your mksysb tape. Here are
the steps:

  1. Boot up in service mode off of the mksysb tape.
  2. Choose option 4 from the menu.
  3. getrootfs hdisk\# sh
Where hdisk\# is the hdisk where hd5 is located.
  4. mount /dev/hd4 /mnt
  5. /etc/methods/chggen -l rmt0 -a block_size=1024
For block_size, use whatever block size the tape was
created with. With 8mm most likely 1024 with 1/4" most
likely 512. DO NO USE /dev/rmt0 USE ONLY rmt0 By itself.
If you use /dev/rmt0 it will not give you a error message
         even though it is wrong.
  6. cd /mnt
  7. pax -rvf /dev/rmt0 -pmop ./etc
  8. exit
  9. sync;sync;sync
