Recover info on 8mm that is partially overwritten?

Question:

I have a 8mm tape which contains a filesystem backup made via smit.  
Another user accidentally used the same tape to create tar backup 
of a couple of small files.  Can I restore any data from my original 
backup?

Rresponse: 

Once the tar finishes writing its data, it will write an 
end-of-tape mark.  There is no way to access anything beyond the 
end-of-tape mark.  You may want to consider using a no-rewind
device so that if an image is accidentally written to the tape it
will be after the important image.
