Receive error 0511-195 while creating a mksysb
Question:
I have a RISC System/6000 model 320H running 3.2.3 or 3.2.2. I have
an IBM 8mm external tape drive. I use the tar command and mksysb to
backup my system and data and it always fails on me whenever I reach
a certain file. Why does this happen?
Response:
We ran fsck on the filesystem that contains the file and it found
and corrected some 'block' problems. We remounted the filesystem
and attempted the mksysb again. Again it failed on the same file
as originally. Suggested to try and tar another filesystem (tried
/home). This eventually failed as well.
You ran "errpt" and noticed 'tons' of disk operation errors and scsi
device errors. At this point, we addressed the hardware issues.
You indicated that you have several different 'cables' and you were
going to try a few things. You have determined that the errors
were due to a bad scsi cable. After you replaced it, you were no
longer getting errors either the disk, tape drive or scsi controller.
However, when you run the mksysb it still fails at the same spot.
We found that when the tape drive is the last device on the scsi chain,
it would generate disk errors and scsi controller errors. Resolved
problem by putting the tape drive as the first device on the scsi chain. The tape drive was
It was probably not properly terminated.
