Hostname resolution: where does it look first DNS or NIS?
( Does aix look at DNS first or NIS first for hostname resolution?
Response:
Here are the lookup sequences for a few different cases:
AIX NIS client (no DNS):
lookup will be an NIS lookup first always, if the NIS server
has the named (makedbm -b) reference, then if it is not resolved
via NIS, the NIS server will then attempt to resolve via DNS.
AIX NIS client (with DNS):
lookup will always be DNS first, is not resolved, it will then
try the NIS server.
AIX NIS Server (no DNS):
This will be NIS resolution only.
AIX NIS Server (with DNS):
It will always look at DNS first, then NIS. This only applies to
applies to users that login to the NIS server directly. All
NIS client requests will always resolve NIS first as mentioned
before. This part can be a little confusing if the NIS server
is also a NFS server exporting directories with specific
access.
