How do I Move a RAN from remote to local location?

Question:

     I'm running aix 3.2.4 off a model 1170. I have two dedicated
leased lines that are hooked up to two dsu modems. The other end of
those two leased lines are two RANs. I want to know how to
configure the RANs through smit so that I can take the RAN
board off of the leased line and move it to the local site.

Response:

128-Port Controller
Current setup:
 Controller Line1: --- DSU -/- DSU --- RAN1 -- RAN2 - RAN4 - Terminator
Controller Line2: --- DSU -/- DSU --- RAN1 -- RAN2 --Terminator

Wants to change Line two
Controller Line2: --- RAN1 ---DSU -/- DSU --- RAN2 - Terminator

Problem 1: They brounght RAN with 2n set on the RAN back from remote site.
This means that both RANs need to have the node number reset, then the
devices need to get added.

Proceedure:
1. Set node number on local RAN to 1n
Do this as follows: Turn off power to RAN, turn back on. When
the 7-segment indicators on the RAN turn to P1, hit the
left arrow button. Push right arrow button until the
display shows 1n. Hit the left button to set the number.
This RAN can be turned off and number will hold.
2. Set node number on remote RAN to 2n. (Node numbers must be sequential)
Again Power, P1, left arrow, right arrow to 2n, left arrow.
3. Make changes in SMIT for concentrator:
Devices directly connected to 128-port board, or to another
concentrator show as direct. Ones that are connected to a modem
show up as a modem. If fewer than 4 RAN are connected, the first
location without a RAN is also set to modem (hence Node 3 below).
  Line 2 Cable Type [8]
      Node 1 Comm Mode [direct]
      Node 2 Comm Mode [rs422_modem]
      Node 3 Comm Mode [rs422_modem]
      Node 4 Comm Mode [direct]
4. Run 'cfgmgr' from command line, or Configure Devices Added After IPL
from smit to make the concentrators available.
5. Run 'lsdev -Cc concentrator' to list the RANs. These two RAN should
show the following on your system.
sa4 Available 00-03-21 16-Port RAN EIA-232 for 128-Port Adapter
sa5 Available 00-03-22 16-Port RAN EIA-232 for 128-Port Adapter

6. Now the tty's that were on the old RAN 1n will show up on the local
new 1n RAN. We can see what these tty's are defined as with:
lsdev -Cs rs232 | grep 03-2
tty4 Available 00-03-21-02 Asynchronous Terminal
tty5 Available 00-03-21-00 Asynchronous Terminal
tty36 Available 00-03-21-01 Asynchronous Terminal
etc.
We need to move these so they will have numbers 00-03-22-02 Asynchronous.
This can be done from smit as follows: for each tty
For example I will use tty4 and move to 03-22-02.
smitty tty
Move a TTY to Another Port
Move cursor to desired item and press Enter.
            tty4 Available 00-03-21-02 Asynchronous Terminal
Move cursor to desired item and press Enter.
            sa7 Available 00-03-22 16-Port RAN EIA-232 for 128-Port Adapter

Move a TTY to Another Port

Type or select values in entry fields.
Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

                                                        [Entry Fields]
  TTY tty4
  Parent adapter sa7
* PORT number                                        [4]                      +

Use F4 key to select the PORT number corresponding to the old port number.
lsdev -Cc tty | grep tty4 will now show:
tty4 Available 00-03-22-02 Asynchronous Terminal

Repeat for the other terminals.

Remote users should now be set, Add new devices to 00-03-21 for local users.

We did not have to run cfgmgr because we did not add a new RAN,
but only moved one. We were able to take the RAN from defined
to AVAILABLE with

mkdev -l sa3
