3570 --> All About It

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MODEL B00, B01, B02, B11, AND B12?

Model B00:
Deskside Single Drive Unit with no tape magazine
Can only load one tape at a time like a low end tape drive.

Model B01:
Deskside Single Drive Unit with two 10 tape magazines
Has an internal robot to load and unload tapes to/from magazine

Model B02:
Deskside Dual Drive Unit with two 10 tape magazines
Has an internal robot to load and unload tapes to/from magazine

Model B11:
Rack Mounted Singe Drive Unit with two 10 tape magazines
Has an internal robot to load and unload tapes to/from magazine

Model B12:
Rack Mounted Dual Drive Unit with two 10 tape magazines
Has an internal robot to load and unload tapes to/from magazine

WHAT IF MY UNIT'S CONFIGURATION DOES NOT MATCH WHAT I REALLY HAVE?

Often times the unit that arrives does not match the configuration of
the CE panel. For example: You have a rack mounted dual drive, model B12
unit but the VPD indicates that each drive is B01.

This problem may manifest in one or more of the below ways:

 1) When both drives are cabled to the same host, AND the OS sees both
drives as 'Available' but they both have the same SCSI address.

Also, when you try to write to Drive 2, you get TAPE_ERR4 events in
the error log. *Note: TAPE_ERR4 usually means that there is a
termination problem or bent pins in the connector.

 2) With every command to the drive(s), you get the error:
"A System Call Received a Parameter that is not Valid"

 3) When you try to "Set Library Mode", "Unload Drive", "Edit
Config" or select "Start" from the tape unit LED display,
you do not get prompted to select "Drive 1 or Drive 2".

 4) You try to change the SCSI address of Drive 2 from the tape unit's
LED display panel but the address change does not hold.

 * See also items DV8153 or DZ2631 ,for examples of this problem and
    how it may manifest.

It can be corrected in the following manner via the CE panel:
Press the 'Menu Mode' Button (leftmost button)
At:
  "Warning: Autorized"
  "Service Personnel"
  "Only" \<--|

Press the 'Enter' Button (rightmost button)
At:
  "Cancel"
  "Proceed"

Press the Down Arrow to select "Proceed"
Press the 'Enter' Button to confirm choice
At:
   "Drive 1"
   "*Drive 2"

Select Drive 1 first as the configuration of Drive 1 controls the ability
to configure Drive 2 in some cases.

Use the down arrow to select "Config/Install" and press the 'Enter' button
Use the down arrow to select "Drv Features" and press the 'Enter' button
Use the down arrow to select the appropriate model description.

When complete, select "Cancel" to exit back through each menu.
Then press the 'Menu Mode' button (leftmost).
At:
  "Switching to"
  "Operator Mode" \<-|

Press the Enter Button
Select "Proceed" and press the 'Enter' button again

*If this does not solve the above problem, contact hardware support for
further assistance at 800-IBM-SERV

WHAT DOES THE * SYMBOL MEAN?

The * symbol is displayed when either that option is not available or
when the option is currently in use.

For example: If there is a tape loaded in the drive, the START option
to load the drive will have a * next to it indicating that
the drive can not be loaded.

Also, in dual drive models, when there is a problem with
the second drive, often all options that prompt for the
second drive will have a * next to DRIVE 2.

WHAT DRIVER'S DOES IT USE?
This unit is controlled by the Atape device driver. If the driver is
not installed, the drives will still be configured, but will be
identified as OST (Other SCSI Tape). The drive is operational, but
many features will not be available.

WHAT DO THE OPERATOR PANEL BUTTONS DO?

Menu Mode Button -- Leftmost button
                        Access the CE panel

Up Arrow Button -- 2nd button from left
                        Scroll Up

   Enter Buttom -- Rightmost button
                     Confirm Selection

HOW DO I CABLE THE SINGLE DRIVE MODELS?
The 3570 is a dual ported, differential, 16 bit device.

Use the appropriate Adapter to First Device cable into one of the two
ports on the back of the tape drive.

Place a terminator in the second port.

HOW DO I CABLE THE DUAL DRIVE MODELS?

The 3570 is a dual ported, differential, 16 bit device.

Use the appropriate Adapter to First Device cable into the leftmost
port on the back of Drive 1.

Use the appropriate Device to Device cable from the rightmost port of
Drive 1 into the leftmost port of Drive two.

Place a terminator in the second port.

If the device is to be attached to only one host, leave the white, thin
jumper cable connected between drive 1 and drive 2.

*Even if operating in Split mode.

 * If the device is to be twin-tailed between two hosts; and therefore,
operated in Split mode, the white, thin jumper cable should not
    be attached.
The Model B02 is shipped with the jumper already installed.

The Model B12 is shipped with the jumper not installed. It is in a
separate package in the shipping box.

           Select the desired address 0-F

Select the 'Cancel' option to return to the previous menu until you
have exited back to the 'Main Menu'.

WHAT ARE THE LIBRARY MODES OF OPERATION?

Automatic (Sequential) -- Allows the next sequentially posistioned
tape to be loaded when an offline command is
issued or when the backups are to span
                             multiple tapes without manual intervention.

This is the mode to select when working with
                             Sysback/6000.

* The tape drive characteristic: "Use Autoloading Feature at End-of-Tape"
affects your ability to span tapes without human intervention.
Setting this value to 'yes' treats all tapes in the magazine as one
giant virtual tape. The OS does not detect the tape change.

For tar, dd, cpio, backup, etc., this feature must be set to yes to
     span tapes.
For Sysback/6000, this feature must be set to no.

This feature can be set by issuing the following command:
      chdev -l rmt\# -a autoload=yes OR chdev -l rmt\# -a autoload=no

Random -- This mode allows tapes to be loaded / unloaded to the
drive(s) from the magazine using tapeutil. The rmt\#.smc
must be listed in the /dev directory in order to load tapes
              via the command line.

              Also, the tape drive characteristic:
"Use Random Mode to Emulate Autoloader Tape Drive"
will allow the drive to span multiple tapes as if it were
set to Automatic mode, yet provide the ability to use
              tapeutil.

This feature can be set by issuing the following command:
      chdev -l rmt\# -a emulate_auto=yes
                                        OR
      chdev -l rmt\# -a emulate_auto=no

Manual -- This mode is used to load tapes via the tape drive LED
             display panel.

* In dual drive models, each drive may have a different Library mode
setting when operated in 'Split' configuration.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION OPTIONS?

Base -- All library elements are available to all hosts.
In dual drive models, it is selected from Drive 1 but applies
             to both drives

This mode is primarily used for single host attachment.

  * Special Note for dual drive models:

In this configuration, you can only load tapes to Drive 1 via the
LED display panel as everything is keyed off of Drive 1. However,
you may load tapes to Drive 2 via tapeutil if the Library mode
        is set to 'Random'.

Split -- This configuration is most often used when the library unit
is to be twin-tailed between 2 hosts. In this configuration,
the library is "split" into 2 smaller half size libraries,
each to be used by only one host.
This is advantageous when an application does not allow
the sharing of one tape drive between 2 hosts.

            The "first/primary" library consists of:
               Drive 1
               The import/export (priority) cell
               The right most magazine
               Transport Mechanism

*This is available via the Drive 1 SCSI ports. Ie: The host that is
   connected via these ports.

            The "second" library consists of:
               Drive 2
               The leftmost magazine
               Transport Mechanism

* This is available via the Drive 2 SCSI ports. Ie: The host that is
    connected via these ports.

* In split mode, the Library Mode of operation is set independantly for
     each drive.

 * Special Note for dual drive models:

In this configuration, you can load tapes to Drive 1 or Drive 2 via
the LED display panel. However, you may only load tapes to Drive 1
         via tapeutil.

HOW DO I GET THE smc DEVICE?

This device does not have a /dev/smc\# device. Instead, you will have
a rmt\#.smc special file in the /dev directory.

The rmt\#.smc special file will only be created if the tape drive is set
to Random Mode when it is configured to the OS.

WHAT IS THE BEST BLOCK SIZE/BUFFER SIZE?

The optimum block size is 262114 (aka 256kbytes). Variable length
of 0 is also useful when coupled with the appropriate buffer
     flags.

In order to achieve the best performance, you MUST use the below
buffer flags added to you favorite backup command:

   mksysb -b512
   savevg -b512
   backup -b512
   tar -N512
   cpio -C512
   dd bs=512b OR ibs=512b and obs=512b
                        bs=256k OR ibs=256k and obs=256k
   Sysback/6000 -b256

WHAT ARE THE APPLICABLE DENSITY SETTINGS?

There are no denisty settings for this drive. The only option related
to capacity is to set Hardware Compression to yes or no.

WHAT IS THE COMPRESSION RATIO?

The Hardware Compression ratio is 3:1.

To the Hardware Compression attribute, issue the following command:
     chdev -l rmt\# -a compress=yes OR chdev -l rmt\# -a compress=no

WHAT DOES THE MENU BUTTON DO FROM ONLINE MODE?

Pressing the MENU key will yield the following menu:

    Show Status
    Start
    Unload Drive
    Set Library Mode
    Edit Configuration
    Services
    Clean
    Export Priority

For a detailed flowchart of the above menu options, see page 87 in the:

Magstar MP Tape Subsystem Operator Guide, B Series Models.
   Pub\# GA32-0345

HOW DO I MANUALLY LOAD A TAPE?

  1) Set the mode to 'Manual" via the tape drive LED display.

  2) Press the 'Enter' key to display the 'Main Menu'.

  3) Select 'Start'.

  4) In dual drive models, select the appropriate drive.

  The tape will be loaded.

*Note: If a tape is in the 'Priority' cell when the option to 'Start'
is selected, the tape will be loaded from this cell.

If there is no tape in the 'Priority' cell when the option to
'Start' is selected, the right most tape in the magazine will
         be loaded.

To unload the tape, change the option in step 3 to 'Unload'.

*The tape will be ejected to the export position of the cell from
     which it was loaded.

CAN I MOVE A CARTRIDGE WITHIN THE LIBRARY FROM THE OPERATOR PANEL?

You can move a tape from a magazine cell to drive, and from the drive
    back to the originating cell.

You can move from cell 'A' to drive to cell 'B'.

You can NOT move from cell to cell.

You can NOT move from drive to drive.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE IMPORT AND EXPORT POSISTIONS?

The tapes can be 'set' in the magazine in 2 positions.

The import position is when the front end of the tape is flush with
the front end of the magazine. In this position, tapes may be loaded
    into the drive(s).

The export position is when the front end of the tape about 1.5 inches
closer to the library door than the magazine. In this position, the
    tapes may not be loaded.

To reset a tape(s) from export to import posisiton, remove the magazine
from the library. There is 'lever' type mechanism on the bottom of
the magazine. Pull the mechanism while simultaneously pushing the
front of the tape to be flush with the magazine casing.

Note:
When the drive(s) is in 'Random' mode and a tape is unloaded via
tapeutil, the tape will be returned to the IMPORT posistion.

When the drive(s) is in 'Automatic' mode and a tape is unloaded via
tctl -f /dev/rmt\# offline, the tape will be returned to the EXPORT
   position.

When the drive is in 'Manual' mode and a tape is unloaded via the
LED display panel, the tape will be returned to the EXPORT position.

* To unload and return a tape to it's originating cell in Automatic mode,
simply issue: tctl -f /dev/rmt\# offline

* To unload and return a tape to it's cell in Random mode, do one of the
    following:

  tapeutil -f /dev/rmt\# unmount \dest cell \#

  OR

  tctl -f /dev/rmt\# offline
  tapeutil -f /dev/rmt\# unmount \dest cell \#

(tctl offline in this mode will NOT return the tape to it's cell)

MAY I HAVE A BAR CODE READER PLEASE?

These units may be purchased with an optional Bar code reader.
The labels used on these tapes may be ordered from 888-IBM-MEDIA in the
United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

Part Number: 05H9393 (10 replacement labels)

HOW DO I LOAD MICROCODE?

1) Place the micrcode installable file in a directory on the RISC/6000
if you have downloaded it from the internet. Otherwise, place the
   disktte into the floppy drive.

2) diag

3) Press Enter

4) Choose:
     IBM Tape Drive Service Aids

5) Choose:
     Microcode load

6) Select the rmt device

7) Enter the directory path and file name at:
      Enter Filename:

*If the microcode is on diskette, leave the default of /dev/rfd0*

8) F7 to commit and start the process.

WHAT IF MY SECOND DRIVE DOES NOT SHOW UP ON THE LED DISPLAY PANEL IN A
B02 OR B12?

1) When you try to change the SCSI address of Drive 2 on the tape drive
LED display but the address change doesn't hold.

2) There is constantly a * next to "Drive 2". When you select the drive
the * goes away only for a couple of seconds.

First verify that there is in fact a second drive in the unit by looking
at the rear of the unit and locate 2 PAIR of SCSI ports.

Then verify that there is power to the second drive by removing both
magazines and watching the leftmost drive during power on. It has 3
lights that should illuminate during the power on or resest operations.

* Note: There is a separate power cable for each drive in the unit.

If all of the above is "ok", this may mean that Drive 1 is
  configured as either a B00, B01, or B11.

Follow the steps in the section titled "WHAT IF MY UNIT'S CONFIGURATION
DOES NOT MATCH WHAT I REALLY HAVE?"

HOW TO USE TAPEUTIL WITH THIS DRIVE?

* Note: Do not let the "ABNORMAL" state mislead you. This changes as
tapes are moved. You will see "Abnormal" state when media is loaded
into a slot or drive and "Normal" when it is empty. This will only
occur when the unit does not have the optional bar code reader
    installed.

For example:

Library has tapes in slot 32 only.

Slot 32 and 33 will say "Abnormal".

I move the tape from 32 to 16. Now slot 32 will say "Normal" and slot 16
  will say "Abnormal".

I then move the tape from 16 back to 32. Now slot 16 will say "Normal"
and slot 32 will say "Abnormal".

* Another Special Note about tapeutil and dual drive models:

When the unit is in Base Configuration attached to a single host,
you can use tapeutil to load either drive in a dual drive model.

When the unit is in 'Split' Configuration, and each drive is in
'Random' mode, attached to a single host, you can use tapeutil
to load only Drive 1 in a dual drive model.

However, if you have the optional bar code reader installed, you the
VOLSER number will be displayed rather than "Normal" or "Abnormal".

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE TAPES THAT IT USES!

The tapes are long and slender in a metal casing.
  The tapes are 128 track.
Load point is the midpoint of the tape.

The data is written in the following manner:

                  | ------------
                  | \------------
   \------------- |
   ------------- |

Therefore, maximum sync time is no more than half the length of the
  tape.

Labels should never be placed onto the metal casing. They should only
be placed onto the areas designated for labling.
