Xstation not starting with window manager, not exiting properly

Question:

How do you get your window manager to start when you login from and
Xsation not using XDM?

When customer logs out, only gray window appears.

Response:

Started the xserver with the startx command.

The customer was having a very interesting problem.  When you killed
all clients, then killed motif under Xwindows, the server just hung.
No new login window appeared.  We changed the background to red, and it just
hung at a red window.  We compared the hardware setup from the \\
\ menus and found that under
  Xstation Configuration
      Xwindows
he had selected "Retain X-Settings on Restart".
Turning this off allowed the Xserver to die normally.

This was on an Xstation 150 booting off Xstation Manager 1.4.
