How do I get TRACE to work on a 3151
Question:
I have an IBM 3151 terminal set up as the console on my RISC. I want to
get everything that is coming to the 3151 to be sent out its printer port .
I still want to use the terminal as the console, so pass through printing is
not what I'm thinking.
Response:
This is done with the 'trace' key on the 3151. You have tried that and it does not
work. It should put a 'trace ' message on the screen and then start sending
everything out to the printer port as well as display it on the screen.
Since your 'trace' message did not come up, this will be tested here in the lab
and we will get back to you.
Response:
We tested this in the lab with success. It turns out that all you need
is a connection to pins 3 and 7. Pin three is "Received Data RD" Out.
Pin 7 in Signal Ground.
No, the screen does not display anything signifying that you are in
'trace' mode. Once you hit \^Trace, you in trace mode until you hit
\^Trace again.
Response:
The customer wasn't able to get this to work. This probably means
that the printer needs some handshaking, or the cable is wrong. She
did not know what kind of printer they were trying to use. I suggested
that she hook up another terminal first, and then get a breakout
box.
The cable between the aux port and the 2nd terminal or printer should
be a straight through cable. This is documented on page 8-21 of the
3151 reference manual GA18-2634-01.
Auxilary Port Printer
1 --------- Ground -------------- 1
2 \<-------- TD \<---------------- 2 (not needed for trace)
3 --------> RD ----------------> 3 data to printer
4 /\<---- RTS \<---------------- 4 status from printer
5 \\----> CTS ----------------> 5 wrapped back to printer in aux port
6 --------> DSR ----------------> 6 Status from 3151 always on
7 --------- Signal Ground ------- 7
8 --------> CD ----------------> 8 Status from 3151 always on
20 \<-------- DTR \<---------------- 20 Printer status, but we don't care.
This should work, unless the printer needs some other line high. You can
always get this with line 6 or 8.
Ctrl-trace starts the flow of data out the port, ctrl-trace again stops
the data.
