Problems keeping AIX V 3.2 X.25 physical level connected.

QUESTION:

I am using AIX 3.2.4 attempting to communicate to the
Telenet packet switching data network (PSDN.) The physical
connection has established, but the network provider says
that it is dropped when I exit "xmanage" with either an ESC or
  quit.

I use "xmanage" to start communications. When I use "change
status" to connect, I receive the message:
      Port has been connected

Why is everything dropped when I leave xmanage?

ANSWER:

The bottom line is that your network provider needs to give you a leased line
connection. It appears that they are monitoring our DTR signal and shutting
down the link when the frame and packet are closed. This is incorrect. They
must keep the link up all the time regardless.

Explanation:
X.25 has three layers. The Physical, Frame, and Packet. When you boot the
RISC/6000, the Physical (the modem line between the RISC and the network) is
established. This link should not go down while both the RISC and the
network have power. If one side goes down, however, the link is broken.

The Frame level exists between the RISC and the network only. The Packet
level is the application level and it exists between the RISC and some remote
host across the network.

When all applications using the X.25 device are closed, the Frame and Packet
levels go disconnected. This is normal. They will connect automatically
when an application needs to use X.25 -- all of this is transparent to the
user. The physical layer, however, must always stay up.

We did an xmonitor trace that you can also show to the network provider. The
cause 7 and diagnostic 250 are not defined in the CCITT standard codes, so
this is something unique that is being generated by this particular network.
Your network provider should know their meaning.
