YP NIS error message, ypxfr failed 1831-479 dbm oper. on map failed

Question:

When a NIS user changes his password, the master server would get the
following message:
  
status received: from ypxfr on ncc   (ncc is a NIS Slave Server) 
failed: 1831-479 dbm operation on map failed

This message was only related to one NIS slave server.  This message
also occurred when any map was rebuilt on the Master Server.

The /var file system on the NIS slave server (ncc) was 100 % full.
Deleting files from other /var subdirectories resolved the problem.
