F50 will not boot from CDROM

ENV: AIX 4.2.1, 7025 Model F50

PROBLEM: Customer is trying to install AIX on an F50 but cannot
              boot into service.
ACTION TAKEN: Had customer hold down the 5 key upon startup to access
the cdrom to boot off of. This did not work and we
              tried twice.
. Verified that customer is using an AIX 4.2.1 install CD.
              There is no graphics adapter installed in the system;
customer is using an ASCII terminal connected to the S1
              port.
. Had customer shutdown the system and go into SMS by
hitting the '1' key after the \ mnemonic appeared
              on the screen.
. We then selected "multiboot", "select boot device" and
"display current settings". Currently, only the disk
drive is listed as a boot device.
. Had customer go back to the previous menu and restore the
default settings. We then went back to check the current
              settings, and they are correct:
                  diskette cdrom, tape, disk, ethernet
. Went back to the main SMS menu and selected "Display
Configuration". The firmware level is WIL97094.
. We rebooted the system and got the following message:
                  PreP-boot could not open deblocker
. Found the following steps to try in Austext:
              1) After the keyboard icon appears, press F1 on the
native keyboard or 1 on the tty keyboard.
This will present the SMS interface.
              2) Select "Multiboot" from the SMS menu.
              3) Select "Install" from the Multiboot menu.
              4) Select the cdrom drive.
. However, we couldn't select the CDROM drive.
. Further research revealed an alternative method:
              1) Go to the main SMS menu and hit the '8' key. This
will get you to an "ok>" prompt.
              2) From there, type in this EXACT command (these are
                 backslashes):
. boot cdrom:\\ppc\\chrp\\bootfile.exe
. Customer is seeing messages about starting up physical
              processor zero, one, two, etc.
. Customer's now at the "Welcome to the Base Operating
System Installation Assistant" screen. He'll go ahead
from here and reinstall the system.
.ACTION PLAN: Close call.
. This problem has been addressed by the firmware level
              WIL97286, Build Date 10/13/97, released 10/29/97.
