Response:

 CUSTOMER REP: 4.1.4, model c20

PROBLEM: Trying to restore some files from a cpio archive on a 4mm
tape.

ACTION TAKEN: I had her put the tape in the machine.
The block size is already set to 0.
 \# tctl rewind
 \# dd if=/dev/rmt0 of=/tmp/block bs=128k count=1
"0+1 records in, 0+1 records out"
 \# file /tmp/block
 "ASCII cpio archive"
 \# wc -c /tmp/block
 "1024"
 \# chdev -l rmt0 -a block_size=1024
 "rmt0 changed"
 \# pax -vf /dev/rmt0
This began to list files, but stopped after displaying:
 "036==pro/bin/aix/taintprel"
However, the tape activity light is still flashing, so I advised her
to let it run.
"pax offset 5M+60K media serface error. file is corrupt."
Lots of errors like this, with the offset changing.

Put in another tape and then tried to write a simple archive:
 \# pax -x cpio -wvf /dev/rmt0 /tmp
 \# pax -vf /dev/rmt0
This displayed the entire listing with no errors.

I told her that it looks like her tape is damaged. She agreed. She
will try to get another copy of that tape.

 ACTION PLAN: CWCA.
