Problem with NIS: Can't login to slave machine.

 Spoke with the customer and helped him get NIS running on a Master and
Slave.

Verified his environment with the following commands;

\# domainname                       (not set
\# domainname hq
hq
\# ypwhich ( cannot bind to domain hq \# cd /etc/yp
\# ls -l hq ( good all files are there \# ypwhich
localhost.hq

Are you also running DNS?
                Yes!

Also have 30 PC's that use FTP's TCP/IP which requires DNS.

Is it also important that we are funning HACMP?

        Yes!

Well, why didn't my domainname for yp show up when I put it in
"rc.local" when I called it in "/etc/inittab"?

        NIS is not started from "rc.local".

        The correct files to use are;

rc.boot         ( booting rc.net          ( activates the
communications adapter rc.tcpip ( activates tcpip
rc.nfs ( activates NFS and NIS

We then reconfigured NIS and removed rc.local from inittab.

Customer: Now that I have a DNS Primary and NIS Master on the Primary
           of my HACMP and the NIS Slave and the Secondary DNS server on my
           Backup HACMP do you see any problems?

        YES !!!!

What are some concerns and can you fix them?

        The problems will occur when the Primary HACMP system goes
        down and also when it comes up for the first time. The
        implementation is too compicated to cover as a Supportline Call.
        What you need is Consultline help to Architect your Network.

I have an HACMP Consultant already.

        You need to get him envolved or use some of his contract time
        to get our help in your environment.
