Terminals configured on a 64-port adapter do not respond.

Question:

I have a 220 with a 64 port adapter at AIX Version 3.2.3E. I have configured
a tty on port 0 of the 16-port concentrator and cannot get a login prompt.
I have installed a number of 64-port adapters in the past so I am certain
I have set up both the 3151 and the cables correctly. What is wrong?

Response:

You had configured 'clocal' on the tty port. This was giving you some
erroneous results as it allowed you to 'cat' data to the port. I have
seen an awful lot of systems with clocal configured on all the tty ports.
This really should ONLY be done if your cabling is not sufficient to
carry the DTR signal from the terminal to DCD on the RISC (typical of
3-wire cable and sometimes 4-wire).

We took 'clocal' off the port by removing it from STTY attributes for
LOGIN and RUNTIME in SMIT and re-checked the port. With the terminal
on, a 'ps -ef' showed the getty process running, but displayed a '?'
in the TTY column. This indicates that there is a problem communicating
with the terminal, specifically the RISC System/6000 does not see CD
as high. In most cases, this is a cabling issue, but since your cables
seem to be correct it may be a hardware issue.

When we checked the 16-port concentrator, we noticed that the heartbeat
indicator was not blinking (the little yellow light on the concentrator
itself). This concentrator is probably faulty.

We replaced the 16-port concentrator with a second concentrator and
rebooted. This concentrator did show an active heartbeat. However, we
were still unable to get a login prompt. Instead, garbage appeared
on the screen (backwards question marks and graphics characters).
We changed the baud rate on the terminal itself to 19200. The tty was
still set at 9600. With this mismatched configuration, we were able to
get a login prompt. This is a known Defect. You can call Defect Support
to get the fix for it. In the mean time, you should be able to leave
your terminals configured at 19200 to get them to work.
