COMP-3 field is being changed in transfer to RISC to mainframe

Question:

I would like to be able to isolate the COMP-3 field in a data file to
get an idea why the field length is being changed when moving from
RISC to mainframe.  It goes from a length of 8 to 16.  I am
transferring the files via SNA-RJE and doing an ASCII to EBCDIC
conversion during the transfer.

How can I use od to find the field??  Why is the field length
changing?

Response:

This customer is writing his data to a line sequential file.  Line
sequential is specifically intended for character data; not special
characters, packed data or binary data.  When other than character
data is used the results are unpredictable.  I told the customer that
if possible he should use record sequential organization for this
file.  He said he would.  I am closing this item.
