SLIP connection from modem on SCSI terminal server

ENV:
AIX 3.2.5
7013-59H

DESC:
Trying to setup SLIP dial-ins and unable to ping between the
two hosts.

ACT:
You are using AIX 3.2.5 sliplogin program (public domain software, not
the AIX 4.x version...) The tty runs a getty and the user "slip" has
an initial program that is a shell script which starts an slattach.

Asked you to try eliminating this script:

pdisable tty048
ifconfig sl48 168.0.0.1 168.0.0.100 netmask 0xffffff00 up
slattach tty048

The slattach starts and when some one dials in you get the
connection established message, but when you ping the remote IP, no
TxD light on the modem ever flickers... ifconfig shows flags=71 so
we know DCD is high.

Checked routing tables with netstat -rn but found just one correct
host route between the two systems - the IPs are not the same as
other network interfaces.

We can cu -dml tty048 and connect with no problem and send AT commands
to the Motorola modem.

Curious why your tty is "tty048" but the slip is "sl48" since the
sl\# and tty\# need to match up exactly for SLIP to work.

lsdev -Cl tty048
   00-06-01-30-16

lsdev -Cc adapter |grep 00-06
   00-06 Wide SCSI adapter

Sounds like an OEM SCSI terminal server... Suggest moving the modem
off the server to a native serial port and add a tty and try the
SLIP connection again.

Customer changed the device name to "tty48" instead of "tty048" and
we tried again, with the modem still of the SCSI terminal server,
but still when you ping no TxD on your modem even though dial-up
sessions (non-SLIP connections) work fine

ACT:
We found that you were using the same IP address for your SLIP and tr
interface... Setup sl48 for 1.1.1.1 and remote 1.1.1.2 but we still
can't ping... When you try to ping no packets are ever sent out the
modem but netstat -in shows an increase in the outbound packets for
the sl48 interface. Again, please move the modem off of the SCSI
terminal server (sts1) to a native serial port or to the 8-port
adapter in the machine...

After moving the modem from the SCSI terminal server to a serial port
off the 8-port SLIP is working fine. Sounds like SLIP and the tty
driver for the SCSI terminal server do not function together.
