Attaching remote RAN to 128-port adapter via fiber optics?

 ENV: model unknown
      AIX 4.1.4
      128-port adapter

 PROBLEM:
Trying to connect a remote RAN via fiber optics:

128port-------RAS_FOM40----(fiber)-----RAS_FOM40----RAN

The remote RAN sticks at P1.

*ACTION TAKEN:
The RAS_FOM40 has a RS530 connection. Is this just a different
pinout or connector, or are protocol conversions involved - we
don't know.

We don't have any RAS equipment to test or try out, so we have no
information or experience in setting this up. However, what IBM
has tested is DigiBoard's fiber optic modem setup:

       (rs422) (fiber)
128port-------DigiMux-----------------DigiMux------RAN-T

The DigiMux is totally transparent, so there can be a pair between
each RAN for multiple remote locations. Since this connection is
entirely "local" (not seen as modems) the 1.2Mb speed is possible.
The maximum length of the run of the fiber can be up to 2 km.

See http://www.dgii.com for information on DigiBoard package.
