3490-D31 TAPE_34XX_ERR Incompatible Tape Length Error

Env: 

3490-D31 18 track drives (not the 3490E, which is 36 track)
These include 3490 A01, A02, B02, B04, D31, D32 

Problem:  Problems writing to tapes, error in errpt

Action Taken:  Customer getting errors in error report:

        TAPE_34XX_ERR: invalid channel
        probable cause: incompatible tape length.

        Getting 0511-195 cannot write storage device
        when doing a tar to the tape drive.

        The customer said that when the do a tar of /etc, it fails
        on about the 5th file. 

        Has 3490-D31 which is an 18 track subsystem.  It will require a
        3480 tape, not a 3490E tape. (see below for descriptions) 

Action Plan:  

        Customer used a 3480 tape and it worked.  

        Tapes:
        3480 - Standard Cartridge System Tape - 18 tracks
                (tape is grey)  

        3490E - Enhanced Capacity Cartridge system - 32 tracks
                (tape is grey with one white bar near label)

        3590 - High Performance Cartridge Tape
                (tape is black with blue inserts)
