Question:

problem with restoring individual file from a sysback backup

Response:

Customer Contact

Response:

Environment: 3.2.5
              sysback 3.3.2.10

Description: Customer is trying to restore a single file from a full
system backup but she is presented with only rootvg but the file is
  in u02 vg.

Action: After much searching it was determined that the sysback
command only backed up rootvg. Then subsequent vg's were stacked onto
the back of the fullsystem backup with the mkvgback command.

Determined that the u02 vg was the 7th image on tape. I had customer
    tctl -f /dev/rmt0.1 fsf 6
    vgrestore -nf /dev/rmt0.1 \

This restore the file but she received error:

reading ended prior to end of data.

Next: FUP 908-298-5584

Test: na

Response:

Action: Despite the error it appeared that the file restored was
complete and valid. Customer will be performing other restores later
today and will see if other errors occur again.

Response:

Not In, Left Message

Response:

Action: I have left message with customer stating that this message is
  a status message.

The restore command is what is determining if all files requested to
be restored have been. When all files have been restored the
"restore" command ends. But the "sbread" command recognized that
there was still more data of the backup image to be read.

Therefore the sbread prints out the "reading ended prior to end of
data" message, indicating that the pipe to the restore command has
been closed while more data of the image backup was still left to
  be read.

This is a status message and all files requested were restored
  completely.

the customer that the -d flag was needed to include files and subdirectories

Response:

Response:

Action: Customer replaced a disk that belonged to prodapps vg. Now
she wants to recreate the volume group and restore the data.

I had customer recreate a volume group from a full system backup.
This recreated the volume group successfully.

Now because of the way the tape was made we must manually position
  ourselves on tape.

        tctl -f /dev/rmt0 rewind
        tctl -f /dev/rmt0.1 fsf 6
        vgrestore -x -d -n -f /dev/rmt0.1
