File images not showing up in smitty using sysback

Env:
  AIX 4.1
  RISC C10
  sysback 3.3.3.8

Desc:
Customer creates some backup images and put them in a directory call
  /backup_images
The backup images are called smp001.rootvg.\
                               smp001.datavg.\
                               smp001.vg1.\

The customer sets up his /usr/lpp/sysback/.remote_access file this way
  +all:+all:all:/backup_images:/backup_images

The permissions are rwxrwxrwxt root system for the /backup_images directory
And the file images has read permissions all the way down.
The /usr/lpp/sysback/.servers file on each of the clients is setup this way:
  smp001 Y

The images would not showup in smitty as a input device for a restore from
the client. The only things that showed up are the remote tape drives.
Once I created a symbolic link to the smp001.datavg.\ and called the
file smp002.datavg.\ (which is one of the clients names) it worked.

So the question is are we stuck with a naming convention with the file
names to showup as input devices when using smitty? I was able to restore
the images without problem from the command line. Is this
  "WORKING AS DESIGN"

Notes from the developer:

This is working as designed. This has always been the case that the
hostname was required as prefix to the file. This will NOT be required in
Version 4.
