HOWTO AIX: How to set the ATM Alternate MAC Address
QUESTION:
I'm running AIX V 4.1.4 and am trying to set an Alternate ATM
address on my Turboways 100 ATM adapter. In SMIT, I select the
adapter, enter the MAC address, but when it executes, I get
the message:
Method error (/etc/methods/chgatm):
0514-017 The following attributes are not valid for the
specified device:
AltMacAddr ALTERNATE ATM MAC address (12 hex digits)
I've tried everything I can think of, but I can't seem to get
past this message. What am I doing wrong?
ANSWER:
To set the alternate MAC address you must:
1. Stop all applications using ATM -- otherwise you will get
a "device busy" message.
Today, the only application is TCP/IP. Use SMIT to either
"detach" or "remove" all at\# interfaces.
2. In SMIT, an address of 123456123456 is set as follows:
Enable Alternate MAC Address yes
Alternate ATM MAC Address (12 hex digits) 0x123456123456
It is not intuitive, but you must precede it with a "0x" in
AIX 4.1.4. This has always been true with adapters like
Ethernet and T-R, but you didn't do it with the old
Turboways 100 driver for AIX V 3.2.
3. Reboot the system. The change will not take effect until
you do this.
The following commands are handy for checking the MAC address
values:
- the "lscfg -l atm0 -v" always reports the burned in address.
(For AIX V 3.2.5, use "lscfg -l atmaio0 -v")
- with AIX 4.1, the "netstat -i" command reports the current
hardware address for ALL TCP/IP interfaces. (This is a very
convenient enhancement!) If an Alternate Address has been
assigned, it will be displayed here -- otherwise it will
display be the real burned in address.
I hope this helps!
