Problems with uppercase vs lowercase filenames on DOS CDROM
Env: Model 250 running AIX 3.2.5
Desc: Customer is making a CDROM on a PC that is being used on a
Model 250. The customer application requires that the filenames be
in uppercase. They show up as uppercase on the PC, but they show up
as lowercase on AIX. He wants to know how to make these files
appear in uppercase to AIX so that their software will work properly.
Action: Filenames in DOS are always uppercase because MS/DOS is NOT
case sensitive and converts everything to UPPERCASE. AIX IS case
sensitive and tends to do everything in lowercase.
At AIX 3.2, you have to use ISO 9660 format CDROM's. ISO 9660
requires that the filenames be in uppercase; however, AIX converts
the filenames to lower case before displaying the filenames. The
good news is that even though the filenames for the files on this
CDROM are shown in lowercase when you list the contents, you CAN
still specify the filename in UPPERCASE and it will still use the
correct file.
Example:
A file is called /cdrom/bob
"cat /cdrom/bob" and "cat /cdrom/BOB" will both work.
If you have RockRidge Extensions, then the file names can be case
sensitive and thus they can show as uppercase, but this format is only
supported in AIX 4.1 and not AIX 3.2.
