customer needs assistance with assign/unassign command

  VM system
  MVS system
  escon director
  3490E external non-scsi

Desc:
Customer has the 3490E attatched to an escon directory.  he also has an
MVS and VM system attatched and when either of them is ipl'd, they
take control of his tape drive.

He see's a assigned/unassigned option in smit and wonders if that 
will solve this problem.


Talked with customer, he is going to try the assign option in smit
on his SP2.  As far as I can tell, this will either succeed in 
which case it will have the assignment, or it will fail, meaning
that some other system has the assignment set somehow.

Next:

Customer will test this out and get back with me.

Customer tested the assign/unassign and it seemed to work.
He did this by setting the assign variable on his Risc system
and tried to have an operator vary on the tape drive on another 
system, this failed.  This proved that the othe system could
not take control of the drive when the assign switch was set in
smit on the Risc system.
