NetView - oid_to_sym

Question:

I would like to have all of my discovered PC to have a symbol
type of PC as opossed to the generic symbol. What do I change
within the oid_to_sym file? Also how can I make the changes to
this file take effect on my existing map?

Answer:

The /usr/OV/conf/C/oid_to_sym file associates an SNMP sysObjectId
with a particular type of symbol.

To see what the sysObjectId of a given node is, from the command line
of your NetView for AIX station, type this:

snmpwalk \ system | grep sysObjectID
                or
snmpwalk \ system.sysObjectID

Now, look for that sysObjectID in the oid_to_sym file. This will give
you the symbol that will be drawn for that machine.

If you are getting blank symbols for certain nodes, it might be
because they do not have SNMP enabled, or it may be because you
do not have the correct community name set.

I can't think of any way, other than through manually changing the
symbol type through the user interface, to have a non-SNMP node
come up with anything other than as a the generic (blank) symbol.

Anyway, once you make the necessary changes to the oid_to_type file,
and once you make sure that your community names are in order,
bring down the netmon daemon and the user interface, and run

  ovtopofix -u

This will cause ipmap to re-evaluate each existing symbol's symbol type
the next time that the user interface is run.
