NetView - unexpected ICMP message

Question:

I am working on another problem and found the following message in the
netmon.trace log:

09:18:34 :-> unexpected ICMP message 3 from 131.230.252.126

What is this trying to tell me and what could cause this?

Answer:

The "received unexpected ping from ..." message just means that netmon
saw a ping response come in on the ICMP port that netmon did NOT initiate.

Netmon will use this information to learn about your network.

To see this for yourself, type "netmon -M -1" from the command line,
then go into /usr/OV/log, and then type "tail -f netmon.trace".

Now, go to another window, and ping some device. You should see
the message in the log file. Don't forget to turn the tracing off
with "netmon -M 0" when you're done, or else your trace file will fill
up your file system.
