NetView - Changing Community Strings for selected nodes.
Question:
Problem:
I need to access a foreign hosts with a community name other then 'public'.
I have attempted two changes and still no luck. The changes I have made are
as follows:
1. Through Option..SNMP Configuration; I added the new community name, with
the sellected IP address and selected OK.
2. I modified the /etc/snmpd.conf file and added the new community name
for the selected IP address, with readOnly.
Now, anytime I try to access this address through MIB Browse, it times out,
with the message about mismatching community name.
Have I changed the correct information, or is there something I'm
missing?
Answer:
The /etc/snmpd.conf file on the machine from which you initiate the
query (get) does not have to change, but the /etc/snmpd.conf file on the
machine that you are trying to query might have to change. It is
possible that the machine that you are on is not properly authorized
to access SNMP information on the target, either because of an IP adddress
range limitation or a limitation on which part of the MIB can be read.
The comments in the /etc/snmpd.conf are pretty good... read those
to ensure that the /etc/snmpd.conf on the target is configured properly.
Once that is done, from the command line of the NetView machine,
type "xnmsnmpconf" (to ensure that you are querying the target with
the correct community name).
Click on an existing configuration such that all of the Target, community...
fields are filled in, then change the fields as necessary. Press
the "Add" button, then press the "OK" button.
You might want to run "xnmsnmpconf" again to ensure that your
values "took".
Once this is done, try using snmpwalk from the command line, and see
what happens (snmpwalk -c \ \ system).
