NetView - symbols not showing up

Question:

  Env: AIX 3.2.5
         Netview 4.1
Cisco 7000 Routers at 10.3 microcode level

Question:

Customer has just installed Netview 4.1, and he noticed that
his Cicso routers are not showing up. The routers sometimes appear on
the map as blank workstation icons, and sometimes do not appear at
all. The interfaces for the routers appear on the map, but appear
unconnected to anything else. The routers have their own community
name, and when the customer used a sniffer on the network, it appears
that netview is looking for the routers with a community name of
 "public".

Action: The customer can ping the routers, so I had him do the
 following:

   ovtopodump -rl \

  This came back with information.

   ovmapdump > /tmp/object.out

Found the router in here, but it was in 0 views.

   ovstop netmon
   ovtopofix -A
   ovstart netmon

  This did not help.

The customer is sure that secondary addressing is on at the routers
and with the netmon daemon. We attempted to locate the object through
Netview, and it did not show up. I told the customer that it is
possible that this could be something wrong on the cisco end. We
tried to create a router manually, but it was blue, and would not turn
 green.

You did an snmpwalk to get the oid:

  .iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.cisco.products.trouter

You used your Mib Browser to trace down the ASN.1 number:

 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.3

 We then looked in /usr/OV/conf/C/oid_to_sym
searched for the ASN.1 number, found an entry:

 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.3:Cisco Router:500cs1

Then cd'd into the /usr/OV/symbols/C directory and:

   grep Cisco *
   grep 500 *

We could not find any file here with a "Cisco Router" "500cs'
 symbol type or class.

So we vi'd /usr/OV/conf/C/oid_to_sym and changed the entry
 for the 500cs to read:
   1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.3:Connector:Gateway

 Then 'ovstop' and 'nv6000'.

Resolution:

Someone had changed the oid_to_sym file without having a valid symbol file
  in the /usr/OV/symbol directory.
