Plextor CD ROM DRIVE LOCKING SYSTEM UP

Question:

4.1.3/NEEDS ASSISTANCE WITH CD ROM DRIVE LOCKING SYSTEM UP

Response:

ENV: 4.1.3, 41T
DESC: Customer's system locks up when he does mount /dev/cd0 to
mount his cd-rom. He cannot cntl-z or cntl-d to get out of it. There
is nothing on the console, unable to telnet in from another and the
errpt -a does not show anything at the times that this has occured.
ACT: Looked at errpt -a and saw these errors in there that were
timestamped prior to the system hang.
   scsi bus error
   OBA49C99
   disk_err3
   35BFC499
Looks like a hardware problem here, but will research further.
NEXT: Research, and call customer back.
TC:n/a.

Response:

ENV: 4.1.3, 41T
DESC: System hangs everytime he does mount /dev/cd0. Not able to telnet
or escape out. Can ping it.
ACT: Put key in Service mode and hit reset to try and force a dump.
Came back with 888-102-300-0c5. Would not dump. Tried making a
secondary dump device hd7 at 6PPs, but still did not dump. Dump status
was -3, 0 bytes.
NEXT: Customer will contact hardware for the scsi cabling and bus,etc.
Closing item, will reopen if necessary.
TC:n/a.

Response:

Response:

ENV: 4.1.3, 41T
DESC: When the customer types in mount /dev/cd0 \ the system
hangs up.
ACT: The customer called and said that he hooked up the cd-rom
drive to a 42T running 4.1.3 and it caused that system to hang also.
He then hooked the drive up to a 3ct running 3.2.5 and had no
problems. It appears that he cannot use the drive with 4.1.3.
NEXT: Research and will call customer.

Response:

ENV: 4.1.3, 41T
DESC: Has a plextor cdrom model px43ch. The mount command causes
his terminal to go blank and he cannot get back in without
rebooting. We tried mount -v cdrfs -r /dev/cd0 /cdrom, but same
results.
ACT: Customer would like to get the latest device drivers for the
cd-rom drive.
NEXT: Queuing to DSSP for the driver information and will check
with Ken tomorrow to see if he was able to order the drivers.
TC:n/a.

Response:

ENV: 4.1.3,41T
DESC: Customer's cd-rom will work at 3.2.5, but not at 4.1.3.
ACT: DSSP has no drivers for that device.
NEXT: Research, will contact customer.
TC:n/a.

Response:

ENV: 4.1.3, 41T and 42T

DESC: Has Plextor cd-rom model px43ch. When he types in the mount
command, the console screen goes blank and he is not able to do cntl-z
cntl-d etc. Also not able to force a good dump. Tried the cd-rom on
different machines, at 3.2.5 it works fine. Deleting filesystems and
starting again led to the same thing.

ACT: Customer is requesting next level since I am out of ideas on this
one. We tried mount -v cdrfs -r /dev/cd0 /cdrom, same result. lsdev
-Cc cdrom shows it is available.

NEXT: Queuing to level 3 per customer's request.

TC:none.

Response:

I believe this item was put into the B3LANG queue by mistake.

NEXT: Requeuing to B3KERN.

Response:

ACT: The customer states that his Plextor CDROM drive was working fine
at AIX 3.2.5. on this 41T machine. When he upgrade to AIX 4.1.3,
this problem occured.
The Plextor CDROM drive fails on all of his 4.1.X systems, but still
works fine on his AIX 3.2.5 systems.
It is configured as OSCD. He tried the other drivers at AIX 4.1, but
they all fail. There are a total of 5 drivers at AIX 4.1.
lscfg -l cd0 -v returns:
  DEVICE            LOCATION          DESCRIPTION

  cd0               00-00-0S-6,0      CD-ROM Drive

        Manufacturer................PLEXTOR
        Machine Type and Model......CD-ROM PX-4XCH
        ROS Level and ID............1.22
        Device Specific.(Z0)........0580020233000018

The customer states that Plextor does not have any microcode fixes for
their drive.
NEXT: Researching.

Response:

ACT: Conference call with Plextor. The latest level microcode for their
4XCDROM is 1.25. They are mailing that out to the customer.
I mailed out the AIX 4.1.4.0 ML IX52536 on 8mm using PMR 7x144,B422.
We are also going to try the following:

Before using the following, save all of your /etc/objrepos/Cu* files.

===========================cut text here ===============================
CuAt:
        name = "cd0"
        attribute = "block_size"
        value = 2048
        type = "R"
        generic = ""
        rep = "n"
        nls_index = 0
.===========================end cut text here============================
. On your machine (as root user) run the following commands (for the co
mmands
   below, I'm assuming you copied the above text into the file /tmp/cdad
d:
.   ODMDIR=/etc/objrepos odmadd /tmp/cdadd
.   /usr/sbin/rmdev -l cd0
.   /usr/sbin/mkdev -l cd0
. Now try to mount it again. If it works then block size
   is your problem and you should do two more commands to save this
   information for subsequent boots:
.   /usr/sbin/savebase
.   /usr/sbin/sync
.   /usr/sbin/sync
========== end note ===

This will change the blocksize from 512 to 2048, which resolved a similar
problem with a Plextor 4XCDROM drive and AIX 4.1.X.

Response:

Response:

ACT: Modifying the ODM did not resolve the problem. I did ship the
AIX 4.1.4 ML yesterday.
NEXT: The customer will apply the 4.1.4 ML and the latest microcode
from Plextor. If it is still failing I will open a PMR and queue it to
L3BDD. WOCB.

Response:

Not In, Left Message

Response:

ACT: The customer is out of the office this week.
NEXT: WOCB next week.

Response:

Response:

ACT: The customer received the latest microcode from Plextor, in the
form of EPROMs and installed them in his CDROM drive. This resolved the
problem.
**** THE REQUIRED LEVEL OF MICROCODE FOR PLEXTOR CDROM DRIVES AND AIX
**** 4.1 is Rev. Level 1.29 ****
