Why a 4.5 Gigabyte disk show 3840 Megabytes Total PPs

Question:

NEEDS ASSISTANCE WITH VOLUME GROUPS/TOTAL PPS-IS THIS ACTUAL SIZE
OF DISK?

Response:

ENV:
.AIX 3.2.5
.DESC:
.Customer bought a 4.5Gb disk and wants to know why smit shows it
as 3840 Megabytes in size(3.8Gb).
.    PP SIZE:        4 megabyte(s)
    TOTAL PPs:      960 (3840 megabytes)
.ACTION:
.3840Mb = 3840 * 1024\^2 = 4,026,531,840 bytes = 4.02Gb not 3.8Gb.  As
for the remaining .48 GB, this is mapped out as bad blocks and for
VGDA/VGSA areas. Additionally, the manufacturer of the disk may
actually produces a 4.5 Billion byte disk instead of a 4.5 Gigabyte
disk.( a difference of 331,838,208 bytes - .33Gb)
