Problem with sysback ver 3 with a 3480 channel attached tape drives
Env:
AIX 325
RISC 590
Sysback Ver: 3.2.0.10
Tape 3480 Channel Attached
Desc:
The customer is attempting to read a sysback tape using
"List Files on volume group backup" after "Backing up a volume
group" and he gets the following error message:
Error: Unable to read the volume header on the device.
vgrestore: unable to read table of contents from device
Action: I searched Austex and didn't find much.
The 3480 tape drive cannot handle a buffer size of 64K.
By default sysback ver 3 will use a 64k buffer size. At
ver 3.2 you can add a -b flag that will allow the user to
set the buffer size in 1k values. The 3480 can handle a 32k
buffer size.
-b \:
Buffer SIZE (In K-bytes): Default=64. Changing this value will either
increase or decrease the amount of data that is written to the output
device at one time. Some devices with small buffers may require you
to reduce this value, while other devices with very large buffers
can benefit from increased performance by increasing this value.
If you are unsure, you should use the default value.
Another problem the customer is having is that his 3480 channel
attached tape drive is NOT showing up as a SCSI_TAPE 'm' but
as a DD_TAPE 'M' from looking at the /usr/include/sys/devinfo.h
file. Sysback will make a call to devinfo to determine the
device tape. Sysback did not know how to control a DD_TAPE
device which is a mag tape drive (channel attached). So
it treated incorrectly.
Next Action:
Sending 3.2.1.27 of sysback to the customer, this should fix
the problem with the 3480 errors
That fixed the problem!!!!
