Bootp network interface problems from a gateway machine - sa tag
Question:
Env: AIX 3.2.5 xstation manager 1.4 xstation model 130
Desc: After adding an ethernet card to the boot host machine
on their ethernet/token-ring network, the xstation was
unable to boot and gave the could not read configuration
file error message.
The network configuration is as follows.
----------------- -----------------
| 192.192.192.2 |====================| 192.192.192.1 |
| Xstation 130 | Ethernet | Gateway |
------------------ | 9.11.2.2 |
-----------------
||
|| Token Ring
||
------------------
| 9.11.2.1 |
Ethernet | Boot host, which|
==========| has token \^ and |
| ethernet adapter|
| 192.192.193.1 |
-------------------
Action: I had Louis put bootp in debug and we discovered that
the boot host was putting in the ethernet IP address
for the boopt_siaddr instead of the correct token-ring address.
I contacted Level 2 who suggested that we add
the sa flag to the network type line of the /etc/bootptab
file to force the bootpd to talk out of the token-ring interface.
example /etc/bootptab entry with the sa flag added:
x_st_mgr.tok130:ht=tr:hd=/etc/x_st_mgr:bf=tok130:T170=2328:sa=9.11.2.1:
After adding this line the Xstation 130 booted successfully.
