The Fibre Channel (FC) adapter provides interconnection among RS /6000 an d other vendors' Fibre Channel products that comply with the proposed American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Access to the FC adapter driver is through Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or through a direct socket connection (raw sockets). The raw sockets interface allows an application to read/write data directly to the adapter driver, bypassing the TCP/IP protocol stack.
The Fibre Channel Adapter/1063 can be used in either a point-to-point configuration to interconnect two RS /6000 300, 500, 900, see figure, or R class machines or in conjunction with the 7319 model 110 Fibre Channel Switch 16/1063 to cluster up to 16 machines (see figure for illustration).
