Chapter 7. Accessing Online Information

This chapter describes the different types of online information available and the various tools to help you access it. All the online information is available on CD-ROM and can be mounted or installed as a licensed program offering with the operating system. The library contains information about using, managing, and programming the operating system, and other programming language software.

To view the online information, you must have a Version 3.2 HTML-compatible web browser.

Available Online Information

The following online information is provided in this release:

• The AIX Version 4.3 Base Documentation CD, which provides the base operating system books and can be viewed with a web browser

• The help command line tool, which displays information about basic commands

• The man command line tool, which displays information about commands, subroutines, and files

If InfoExplorer, which can be purchased and installed separately, is installed on your system, you can access information in the Hypertext Information Base Library Version 1 for AIX.

Viewing Information with a Web Browser

To access the information for viewing in a web browser, do one of the following:

• Select the appropriate documentation icon from the AIX Common Desktop Environment Help Manager.

• In the web browser, view the Base Documentation library by specifying that you want to see the following file:

  /usr/share/man/info/en_US/a_doc_lib/aixgen/topnav/topnav.htm

• In the web browser, view the Extended Documentation library by specifying that you want to see the following file:

  /usr/share/man/info/en_US/a_doc_lib/aixgen/wxinfnav/topnav.htm

Searching for Online Documents

The documentation search service allows you to search the indexes of the online help and document volumes that are installed and registered on your search server.
