1.0 Microcode Change History:

B020

Level B020 fixed the following problem.  In SCSI RAID Subsystems, failing a drive caused the LED to flash, even after replacement.  The flashing did not stop until the system was rebooted.

B019

Change iSeries identify LED blink rate from 50%  to 33% duty

B018

First Level Released

2.0 General information

SUBJECT: IBM pSeries SCSI Enclosure Services

******* PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE NOTICE *********

2.1 Installation Time:
Approximately 30 minutes

3.0 Determine the Current Microcode Level:

Before you install the microcode, it is important to determine the microcode level of the backplane installed in the target system. Use

the following instructions to read the ROS Level and ID stored in the backplane's VPD.

1)  List the backplanes adapters installed in the system by typing:

    lsdev -C | grep ses

Note: All of the backplanes addresses that are installed will be displayed. The backplane names will be sesX, where X is 0, 1, etc.

2) To check the current microcode level for the adapter enter the following command

   lscfg -vl sesX

Where X is the number/s of the previous command.

The Command will produce output similar to

    DEVICE       LOCATION         DESCRIPTION

    ses          2A-08-00-15,0    SCSI Enclosure
    Manufacturer................IBM
    Machine Type and Model......HSBP06E RSU2SCSI
    ROS Level and ID............XXXX
    Device Specify.(Z0).........0D00020232004000
    Device Specify. (Z1)........FN    04N5589

If the ROS Level and ID XXXX is less than B020 then you should update the microcode.

4.0 Downloading and Unpacking the Firmware Update Package from the WEB
a) Make a directory on an AIX system to receive the AIX format file.
Enter: mkdir /etc/microcode

b) Transfer the AIX format file to the /etc/microcode directory (using "Save as ...").
You'll see the filename is sesB020.bin

c) Unpack the file by executing the instructions below. You will be asked for the password from the license agreement.
Enter the commands:
cd /etc/microcode
chmod +x sesB020.bin
./sesB020.bin
[Don't overlook the periods (.) in the above command.]

The directory sesB020 with these files will be added to /etc/microcode.
1) A0900624.B020 (Microcode Image)

Enter the following command to copy the microcode files to " /etc/microcode " directory :
cp /etc/microcode/sesB020/A0900624.B020  /etc/microcode

Enter the following commands to copy these file onto a diskette:
ls /etc/microcode/A0900624.B020 | backup -i -v -f/dev/rfd0

This will produce AIX backup diskettes. Label the diskettes:
" SCSI Enclosure Services Microcode Level B020"

4.1 Downloading and Unpacking the Firmware Update Package from CORE

With the machine powered ON and AIX operational but no activity,
perform the following steps to install the FLASH code into the
4 pack backplane.

1.  Insert diskette with the file downloaded from CORE into the floppy diskette drive of the Media Bay.

2.  Log into the target system (or LPAR that has the media bay assigned) as root.

3.  Type: restore

This will extract the binary imagine A0900624.B020 into the "/etc/microcode" directory.

4.2 Downloading the RPM Format File to the Target Server
Use this method to download to an AIX system:

Note: The instructions that follow are specific AIX commands. AIX commands are CASE (lower and upper) SENSITIVE, and must be entered exactly as shown, including filenames.

a) Make a directory on an AIX system to receive the RPM format file.
    Enter:      mkdir /etc/microcode

b) Transfer the RPM format file to the /etc/microcode directory (using "Save as ...").
You'll see the filename is ses.B020.rpm

c) Unpack the file by executing the instructions below:
    Enter the commands:
        rpm -ihv --ignoreos ses.B020.rpm

The file size and checksum will be verified.

The microcode files will be added to /etc/microcode/

4.3 Downloading File from the Microcode CD-ROM

Copy microcode updates from the CD-ROM to standard locations on your local disk:

1. RPM packaged microcode files will be copied to "/tmp/microcode/RPM"
2. Microcode files will be copied to "/usr/lib/microcode".

Notes:
 - "/etc/microcode" is a symbolic link to "/usr/lib/microcode".
 - If permission does not allow the copy to the above stated directory
or file then the user will be prompted for a new location.

5.0 Microcode Download Procedure-SCSI Enclosure Services

NOTE: Please save current and older versions of the microcode update files in case you need to restore your system.

SES B020 Raw Microcode Filename: A0900624.B020

Filesize: 15291
Checksum:  45006

You are now ready to flash the SES module.

Procedure:
1. Stop all applications.
2. Enter diag
3. Select the "Task Selection" from diagnostics menu.
4. Select "Microcode Download" from "Task Selection" menu.
5. Select SES (backplane) that needs to be updated from the list of devices.

5a. If the 6-pack backplane is attached to a SCSI adapter perform one of the following 2 methods to download.
  A. The first method uses the single command:  diag -c -d sesX -T "download -s disk"
Where X is the numerical character denoting the logical ID of
the backplane (SES) in the system.
If there are more than one backplanes attached, then the command must be run
for each 6-pack backplane to be upgraded.
  B. The second method uses AIX Diagnostics:
     Type: diag
     Press: enter
Select: Task Selection (_________ Service Aids)
     Press: enter
     Select: Download Microcode
     Press: enter
Select: the SES to download the new microcode (if 2 backplanes
are to be downloaded select both)
     Press: F7
     Select: Filesystem
     Press: enter
     Exit from diagnostics when complete.
5b. If the 6-pack backplane is attached to a SCSI RAID adapter perform the following method to download.
***Note: devices.pci.14102e00.diag.4.3.3.50 or higher is required for this function to complete***
