2.0 General Information

This package provides updated Power Subsystem Firmware for use on the following systems only:

pSeries 9119-590
pSeries 9119-595
pSeries 9118-575
pSeries Powered Expansion Rack
pSeries High Performance Switch in any of the above Systems
pSeries High Performance Switch Multi-rack Configuration
iSeries 9406-590

Do not use on any other systems. The package contains downloadable Firmware for some or all of the following power subsystem components: BPC (Bulk Power Controller), BPR (Bulk Power Regulator), DCA (Distributed Converter Assembly and MDA (Motor Drive Assembly).

2.0.0 Where to Obtain the Firmware

This firmware can be found at the following locations:

From the IBM Tech Support Website as individual files ( other.html

1. Look for Power Subsystem for: 9119-595, 9406-595, 9119-590, 9118-575 in the Model column
2. Click on RPM(linux) to download the RPM file
3. Click on XML to download the XML file
4. Load both of these files on the HMC (see section 2.0.1 How to Load the Firmware below)
From the IBM Tech Support Website as a CD-ROM image (p5andi5.iso) :
Use this image file in conjunction with a computer that is capable of creating CD-ROMs.
NOTE: This CD-ROM image also contains System Firmware

2.0.1 How to Load the Firmware

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Before attempting to load this firmware please ensure that your HMC software has been upgraded to Version 4, Release 5.0 (or newer) and that the Required V4R5.0 Maintenance eFix (MH00318) package has been applied. HMC software packages can be found at: http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/hmc/power5/fixes/v4r5.html

2.1 Cautions and Important Notes

Never Turn Off the UEPO switch (red switch) During the Power Subsystem Firmware Update Process -- the update will fail, and the process must be repeated. Also, the power component being loaded could be permanently disabled.
Never Log Off of the HMC During the Power Subsystem Firmware Update Process -- the update will fail, and the process must be repeated.
Service any existing problems with the Power Subsystem prior to attempting to load Power Subsystem Firmware from the HMC. Outstanding problems can cause the Power Subsystem to be in an N-mode power state (which means there has been a loss of redundancy) and can prevent the HMC from being able to load the Power Subsystem Firmware.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After installing the Power Subsystem Firmware, proceed to the HMC console and rebuild the managed frame using the following procedure:

From the "Navigation Area" window pane on the HMC Console:
- select Server and Partition
- select Frame Management
Next, from the "Server and Partition: Frame Management" window pane:
- right-click on the frame that was just updated
- select Rebuild Managed Frame
- answer Yes to the question "Do you want to continue?"
