If you do not use an HMC to manage your system, you can upgrade to a new server firmware (Licensed Internal Code) release by downloading and installing the new release through your operating system (except for 59x model servers, they must use the HMC to install new firmware). Example: Level 01SF222_081_081 is currently installed and you are attempting to install level 01SF225_095_095.
The RPM file provided on this web site is only for use when installing server firmware on a pSeries p5 Server using the AIX or Linux Operating System on a server without an HMC attached.

If you are using an ftp server you must download both the .rpm and .xml
files from the IBM service Web site,
systems.html
If you only want to update your system firmware and no I/O microcode, you can download this
p5 and i5 iso image
and create a CD-ROM to use with your HMC. The CD contains
both the system and
power subsystem firmware images.
If your HMC is internet connected, we recommend you update firmware using the Internet connection.

How to determine the release level of your firmware:
The method used to install a firmware update depends on the release
level of firmware which is currently installed on your system and the
release level you intend to install. The
release level (also known as the EC level) of the new firmware can be determined by
the prefix of the new firmware level's filename.
Example: 01SFXXX_YYY_ZZZ
Where XXX = EC level or release level
