Instructions for installing firmware on a server without an HMC attached:
The RPM file provided on this web site is only for use when installing server firmware on a pSeries p5 Server using the AIX or Linux Operating System on a server without an HMC attached.
To access install instructions go to this URL http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/eserver/
and follow the steps shown below:
Select your country, then under Hardware select your language.
In the left-hand panel, select
--> Service and support
--> Customer service and support
--> Getting fixes
--> Firmware (Licensed Internal Code) fixes
--> Scenarios: Firmware (Licensed Internal Code) fixes--> Get
firmware fixes without an HMC
Attention:
On machine types 9119-590/595 or 9406-595, you should power
off the managed system via the HMC before attempting a Licensed Internal Code update.
On machine types 9119-590/595 or 9406-595, you should ensure that there are no outstanding serviceable events showing on the Service Focal Point before starting the
Licensed Internal Code update.
On machine types 9119-590/595 or 9406-595, you should verify that you have good network connections between the Hardware Management Console and the power and service processor subsystems.
You can verify your network connections by running the following HMC command from an rsh window:
lssysconn -r all
Below is an example output from the lssysconn command. It shows two connections have "state = no connection" problems.
If you see "state = no connection" when running the lssysconn command you should contact support to correct the problem
before starting a Licensed Internal code update:
resource_type=frame,type_model_serial_num=9458-100*918000X,side=a,ipaddr=192.168.253.253,state=No Connection
resource_type=frame,type_model_serial_num=9458-100*918000X,side=b,ipaddr=192.168.254.251,state=No Connection
resource_type=sys,type_model_serial_num=9119-595*512884E,sp=primary,ipaddr=192.168.255.250,state=Connected
resource_type=sys,type_model_serial_num=9119-595*512884E,sp=backup,ipaddr=192.168.252.255,state=Connected
If you only want to update your firmware and no I/O microcode, you can
download this p5and
i5 iso
image and create a CD-ROM to use with your HMC. The CD contains
both the server and
power subsystem firmware images. If your HMC is internet
connected, we recommend you update firmware using the Internet
connection.
The method used to install a firmware update will depend on the release
level of firmware which is currently installed on your system. The
release level (also known as the EC level) can be determined by
the prefix of the update's filename.
Example: 01SFXXX_YYY_ZZZ
Where XXX = EC level or release level
If this update will NOT require a release level update, follow the
steps provided in the "Instructions for updating to a new fix level"
section below.
If this update will require a release
level update, follow the steps provided in the "Instructions for
updating to a new release
level" section below.
Instructions for updating to a new

In the left-hand panel, select
--> Service and support
--> Customer service and support
