TITLE : Booting from installation cd and restoring a mksysb tape. OS LEVEL : AIX 4.x DATE : 06/05/99 VERSION : 1.0 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This procedure is used on machines that do not support booting from tape drives. This can be checked by using the following command:- bootinfo -e If the command returns a 0 then the machine WILL NOT boot from a tape drive. While creating a mksysb tape on a machine that does not supporting booting from tape drive, you should see the following warning :- 0512-043 mksysb: WARNING: This system does not support booting from a tape device. To install the mksysb image you will need to boot your system from bootable media. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1, Place the mksysb into the correct tape drive, and place disk 1 of the installation cd's into the cdrom drive. 2, On a classic RS6000 turn the key switch to service. 3, Power on the machine. 4, If the machine sucessfully IPL'd from the installation cd, the first prompt you will see is :- ******* Please define the System Console. ******* Type a ? and press Enter to use this terminal as the system console. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5, Type the number requested (?) and press return. 6, Type 1 and press Enter to have English during install. The next screen you should see is :- Welcome to Base Operating System Installation and Maintenance Type the number of your choice and press Enter. Choice is indicated by >>>. >>> 1 Start Install Now with Default Settings 2 Change/Show Installation Settings and Install 3 Start Maintenance Mode for System Recovery >>> Choice [1]: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7, Type 3 and press enter to start maintenance mode. The next screen you should see is :- Maintenance Type the number of your choice and press Enter. >>> 1 Access a Root Volume Group 2 Copy a System Dump to Removable Media 3 Access Advanced Maintenance Functions 4 Install from a System Backup >>> Choice [1]: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8, Type 4 and press enter to install from a system backup. The next screen you should see is :- Choose Tape Drive Type the number of the tape drive containing the system backup to be installed and press Enter. Tape Drive Path Name >>> 1 tape/scsi/ost /dev/rmt0 >>> Choice [1]: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9, Type the number that corresponds to the tape drive that the mysysb tape is in and press enter. The next screen you should see is :- Welcome to Base Operating System Installation and Maintenance Type the number of your choice and press Enter.
