Achiever PC 3000 - Re-installing the original software for systems with ESS 1688 audio, USR modem, Cirrus Logic video

How do I reload the original software on my Ambra 3000 computer (ESS 1688 audio, USRobotics modem, Cirrus Logic video)?

Answer:
Follow the steps below.

*** ATTENTION ***
If you follow the steps below, you will lose all your data and program files. The hard drive will no longer contain any personal information. If you have important files you wish to keep, please save them before going any further.

For this procedure you will need:

* The Windows 95 Startup disk
* The Windows 95 CD
* The Ready to Configure CD
* The Wavestar 32 driver diskette

A. Re-installing Windows 95.

  1. Insert the Windows 95 Startup disk and then start the computer.
  2. At the A:\> prompt insert the Windows 95 CD.
  3. Type "FDISK" (without the " " characters) and press Enter.
  4. Choose "Option 3" and press Enter.
  5. Choose "Option 1" and press Enter.
  6. When you see the warning just press the Enter key.
  7. It will then ask you for the volume label. It should be written under where it says VOLUME LABEL on the screen.
  8. Type in the volume label and then press Enter.
  9. When it asks you if you are sure, press "Y" and then press Enter.
  10. Press the "Esc" key to continue.
  11. Choose "Option 1" and press Enter.
  12. From the second menu choose "Option 1" and then press Enter.
  13. When it asks you if you wish to use the maximum available space answer "YES" and press Enter.
  14. Restart the computer.
  15. When you get back to the A:\> prompt type "FORMAT C:".
  16. Press Enter.
  17. It will then ask you if you wish to proceed with the format.
  18. Answer "YES" and then press Enter.
  19. When it is done it will ask you for a volume label, just press Enter.
  20. From the A:\> prompt type "D:" and press Enter.
  21. At the D:\> prompt type "SETUP" and press Enter.
  22. To continue press Enter.
  23. Press Enter once again.
  24. At this point the mouse should work. Click on "YES" to agree with the licence stipulations.
  25. Click "NEXT" to continue.
  26. Click "NEXT" to install the software in the windows directory.
  27. Choose a "TYPICAL" installation, then click "NEXT".
  28. Enter the OEM number found on top of the bar-code on the green Certificate of Authenticity on the Windows 95 manual.
  29. Enter your Name and Company, if you have one, and click "NEXT".
  30. When Windows asks you if you want to install a network adapter, just click on "NEXT".
  31. At the next window, choose "INSTALL THE MOST COMMON COMPONENTS" then click "NEXT".
  32. At the next window choose "NO, I DO NOT WANT A STARTUP DISK", then click on "NEXT".
  33. Click on "NEXT" to copy the windows files to your hard drive.
  34. After the files are copied, click "FINISH" and remove the floppy disk from the A drive. Click "OK" to Restart.
  35. If Windows asks you to insert the Windows 95 CD, do so and click on "OK".
  36. If that does not work, click on "SKIP FILE" until Windows asks you to set the time and date.
  37. Click on "CANCEL" in the ADD PRINTER WIZARD . You will install the printer with the specific disks it came with.
  38. Click on "OK" to restart Windows.

B. Re-installing the Sound card.

  1. Insert the floppy disk labelled "WAVESTAR 32".
  2. Click on "START", "SETTINGS", "CONTROL PANEL", and open "ADD NEW HARDWARE".
  3. Click on "NEXT", then "NO", then "NEXT".
  4. From the list of hardware choose "SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS", then click "NEXT".
  5. Click on "HAVE DISK".
  6. At the next window click on "OK".
  7. From the list that appears, select "ESS1688 AUDIO DRIVE", then click on "OK".
  8. At the following window click on "NEXT".
  9. If Windows asks for the Windows 95 CD, insert it, and click "OK".
  10. At the next window change the A:\> to "D:\WIN95" then click on "OK".
  11. After the files have copied click on "FINISH".
  12. If Windows asks to restart, click on "YES".
  13. When Windows restarts click on "START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL".
  14. Double click on the "SYSTEM" icon, click on the "DEVICE MANAGER" tab.
  15. Double click on the "SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS" option.
  16. Double click on "ESS 1688 AUDIO DRIVE".
  17. Click on the "RESOURCES" tab.
  18. Click on the first "INPUT/OUTPUT RANGE", when it's highlighted in blue, the setting should be 0220-022F. If it is not, remove the checkmark in the "USE AUTOMATIC SETTINGS" box and then click on "Change Settings".
  19. At the end of the value field click on the arrow pointing up until you see "0220-022F", then click "OK".
  20. Click the third "INPUT/OUTPUT RANGE" to highlight it in blue. Next click on "CHANGE SETTING".
  21. Click on the arrow pointing up until you see "0300-0301", then click on "OK".
  22. Click on the "INTERRUPT REQUEST" to highlight it in blue then click on "CHANGE SETTINGS".
  23. Click on the up arrow until you see "1", then click on "OK".
  24. Click on the "DIRECT MEMORY ACCESS" to highlight it in blue and click on "CHANGE SETTINGS".
  25. Click on the up arrow until you see "10" and click on "OK".
  26. When back at the Resources screen click on "OK".
  27. Windows will then ask you if you wish to continue. To do so click on "YES".
  28. When back at the "DEVICE MANAGER" click on "CLOSE".
  29. Click on "START, SHUTDOWN, RESTART THE COMPUTER" and click on "YES".

C.. Re-installing the Modem.

  1. To install the modem, click on "START", select "SHUTDOWN" and choose "YES".
  2. When you restart the computer you will get the IBM logo and see a white box with wavy lines (~~~~) at the top right corner. Press the function key F1.
  3. In the menu highlight "DEVICES AND I/O PORTS" and press Enter.
  4. Highlight "SERIAL PORT SETUP" and press Enter.
  5. Highlight "INFRA RED PORT ADDRESS".
  6. Press the right arrow key until you see "DISABLED".
  7. Press the "Esc" key.
  8. Press the "Esc" key again.
  9. Highlight the "SAVE SETTINGS" option and press Enter.
  10. Press Enter again.
  11. Highlight the "EXIT SETUP" option and press Enter.
  12. Press Enter again.
  13. When Windows restarts, click on "START", select "SETTINGS" and choose "CONTROL PANEL".
  14. Double click on "ADD NEW HARDWARE".
  15. Click on "NEXT", then "NO" and then "NEXT".
  16. From the list of hardware choose "MODEM", then click on "NEXT".
  17. Put a checkmark in "DO NOT DETECT MY MODEM I WILL SELECT FROM A LIST".
  18. Click on "NEXT".
  19. From the list of manufacturers choose "US ROBOTICS INC".
  20. In the list of models choose "SPORTSTER 28800 INTERNAL".
  21. Click on "NEXT".
  22. Click on "COMMUNICATIONS PORT COM 2".
  23. Click on "NEXT".
  24. Click on "FINISH".
  25. Close the Control Panel.
  26. Click on "START", select "SHUTDOWN", select "RESTART THE COMPUTER" and choose "YES" and the modem installation is complete.

D. Re-installing the Video.

  1. You will need to insert the "Ready to Configure CD".
  2. Insert a blank 3.5" high density floppy disk into the A drive.
  3. Click on "Start", select "Programs" and choose "MS DOS prompt".
  4. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type "FORMAT A:" and press Enter.
  5. When the format is complete press Enter for the volume label.
  6. At this point you will be back at the C:\WINDOWS> prompt.
  7. Type the word "EXIT" and press Enter.
  8. You will be back in windows. At this point double click on the "My Computer" icon.
  9. Next, double click on your CD ROM icon. This will give you a window with some files in it.
  10. Double click on the "IBMSETUP" icon, then choose "English".
  11. Click on "Continue".
  12. Click on the "Run Diskette Factory" icon.
  13. From the list of drivers, select "Cirrus Logic GD5436 display drivers for Windows 95".
  14. Click on "Build".
  15. At the next window, click on "Yes", then click on "OK".
  16. After the disk is built, click on "OK".
  17. At the next window, click on "OK" again.
  18. Close the window, then click on "Exit".
  19. Click on "Start", select "Settings", and choose "Control Panel".
  20. Now double click on the "Display" icon.
  21. Click on the "Settings" tab.
  22. Now click on "Change Display Type".
  23. Next to the adapter type, click on "Change".
  24. Click on "Have Disk" and make sure the floppy disk is inserted.
  25. Click on "OK".
  26. At this point the "Cirrus Logic 5436/5446 PCI Direct Draw/VPM (V1.11a)" should be highlighted.
  27. Click on "OK".
  28. Click on "Close".
  29. At the bottom of the next window click on "Apply".
  30. Remove the floppy disk.
  31. Click "YES" to restart and you have finished the re-install.
