Achiever PC 3000 - Re-installing the original software for systems with USR modem/ESS 1688 sound

How do I reload my 3000 series computer with the US Robotics modem and ESS 1688 sound card?

Answer:
Follow the steps below.

*** ATTENTION ***
If you follow the steps below, you will lose all your data and program files. The hard drive will no longer contain any personal information. If you have important files you wish to keep, please save them before going any further.

For this procedure you will need:

* The Windows 95 Startup disk
* The Windows 95 CD and the Certificate of Authenticity
* The diskette labelled "Wavestar32"

A. Installing Windows 95.

1. Insert the Windows 95 Startup disk and then start the computer.
3. At the A:\> prompt insert the Windows 95 CD.
5. Type "FDISK" and press Enter.
7. Choose "Option 3" and press Enter.
9. Choose "Option 1", then press Enter.
11. When you see the warning just press the Enter key.
13. You will be prompted for the volume label. On the screen you will see the title of one of the middle columns as VOLUME LABEL. The word beneath this title is the Volume Label.
15. Type in the volume label and then press Enter. If there was no Volume Label, just press Enter.
17. When it asks you if you are sure, press "Y" and then press Enter.
19. Press the "Esc" to continue.
21. Choose "Option 1" and press Enter.
23. From the second menu choose "Option 1" and then press Enter.
25. When FDISK asks you if you wish to use the maximum available space answer "YES" and press Enter.
27. Restart the computer.
29. When you get back to the A:\> prompt type "FORMAT C:" and press Enter.
31. It will then ask you if you wish to proceed with the format. Answer "YES" and then press Enter.
33. When it is done it will ask you for a Volume Label, just press Enter.
35. From the A:\> prompt type "D:" and press Enter.
37. Type "SETUP" and press Enter.
39. To continue press Enter 2 times.
41. Agree to the licence stipulations.
43. Click "NEXT" to continue.
45. Click "NEXT" to install the software in the WINDOWS directory.
47. Choose a "TYPICAL" installation, then click "NEXT".
49. Enter the OEM number that is on the green Certificate of Authenticity. The number is on top of the bar-code.
51. Enter your Name and Company, if you have one, and then click "NEXT".
53. When Windows asks you if you want to install a network adapter, just click on "NEXT".
55. At the next window, choose "INSTALL THE MOST COMMON COMPONENTS" then click "NEXT".
57. At the next window choose "NO, I DO NOT WANT A STARTUP DISK", then click on "NEXT".
59. Click on "NEXT" to copy the Windows files to the hard drive.
61. When the files are copied, click "FINISH" to restart the computer. Remove the floppy disk and click "OK".
63. If Windows asks you to insert the Windows 95 CD, do so and click "OK".
65. If that does not work, click on "SKIP FILE" until Windows asks you to set the time and date.
67. When Windows asks you to install the printer click on CANCEL. You will install the printer with the specific disks it came with.
69. Click on "OK" to restart Windows.

B. Installing the Sound card.

1. Insert the floppy disk labelled "WAVESTAR 32".
3. Click on "START", choose "SETTINGS", select "CONTROL PANEL" and open "ADD NEW HARDWARE".
5. Click on "NEXT", then "NO" then "NEXT".
7. From the list of hardware choose "SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS", then click "NEXT".
9. Click on the "HAVE DISK" button.
11. Click on "OK".
13. From the list that appears, select "ESS1688 AUDIO DRIVE", then click on "OK".
15. At the following window click on "NEXT".
17. If Windows asks for the Windows 95 CD, insert it and click "OK".
19. At the next window change the A:\> to "D:\WIN95" then click on "OK".
21. After the files have copied click on "FINISH".
23. If Windows asks to restart, click on "YES".
25. When Windows restarts click on "START", choose "SETTINGS", and select "CONTROL PANEL".
27. Double click on the "SYSTEM" icon, then click on the "DEVICE MANAGER" tab.
29. Double click on the "SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS" option.
31. Double click on "ESS ES1688 AUDIO DRIVE".
33. Click on the "RESOURCES" tab.
35. Click on the first "INPUT/OUTPUT RANGE". When it's highlighted in blue, the setting should be "0220-022F". If it is not, remove the checkmark in the "USE AUTOMATIC SETTINGS" then click on "Change Settings".
37. At the end of the value field click on the arrow pointing up until you see "0220-022F". Click "OK" to continue.
39. Click the third "INPUT/OUTPUT RANGE" to highlight it in blue and click on "CHANGE SETTING".
41. Click on the arrow pointing up until you see "0300-0301", then click on "OK".
43. Click on the "INTERRUPT REQUEST" to highlight it in blue then click on "CHANGE SETTINGS".
45. Click on the up arrow until you see "1", then click on "OK".
47. Click on the "DIRECT MEMORY ACCESS" to highlight it in blue, click on "CHANGE SETTINGS".
49. Click on the up arrow until you see "10", then click on "OK".
51. When back at the "RESOURCES" screen click on "OK".
53. Windows will then ask you if you wish to continue. Click on "YES".
55. Click on "CLOSE"
57. Click on "START" , select "SHUTDOWN", choose "RESTART THE COMPUTER", and click on "YES".

C. Installing the Modem card.

1. To install the modem, click on "START", select "SHUTDOWN". Choose the "SHUTDOWN" option and click "YES".
3. When you restart the computer you will get the IBM logo and see a white box with wavy lines (~~~~) at the top right corner of the screen. When you see this, press the function key F1.
5. In the menu highlight "DEVICES AND I/O PORTS" and press Enter.
7. Highlight "SERIAL PORT SETUP" and press Enter.
9. Highlight "INFRA RED PORT ADDRESS".
11. Press the right arrow key until you see "DISABLED".
13. Press the "Esc" key.
15. Press the "Esc" key again.
17. Highlight the "SAVE SETTINGS" option and press Enter.
19. Press Enter again.
21. Highlight the "EXIT SETUP" option and press Enter.
23. Press Enter again.
25. When Windows restarts, click on "START", select "SETTINGS" and choose "CONTROL PANEL".
27. Double click on "ADD NEW HARDWARE".
29. Click on "NEXT", then on "NO" and then "NEXT".
31. From the list of hardware choose "MODEM", then click on "NEXT".
33. Put a checkmark in "DO NOT DETECT MY MODEM I WILL SELECT FROM A LIST".
35. Click on "NEXT".
37. From the list of manufacturers choose "US ROBOTICS INC".
39. In the list of models choose "SPORTSTER 28800 INTERNAL".
41. Click on "NEXT".
43. Click on "COMMUNICATIONS PORT COM 2".
45. Click on "NEXT".
47. Click on "FINISH"
49. Close the Control Panel.
51. Click on "START", select "SHUTDOWN", choose "RESTART THE COMPUTER" and click on "YES". After the system restarts, you are finished.
