Network Station - PDT support in the 3270e emulator - emulator screen print help

Applicable to: World-Wide

Emulator screen print can be done to any printer configured within IBM Network Station Manager (NSM).

Emulator screen print does not usually require 'tuning' with a PDT. TN3270E host print is somewhat more likely to require tuning from a PDT. PDT support for TN3270E LU1 print is supported in Rel 3 PTF3, which became available late last year. PDT support for TN3270E LU3 print will be available in an upcoming Rel 3 PTF, scheduled to be available to customers within the next two weeks. For TN3270E host print, the target printer must be configured in NSM, just like for emulator screen print. Also, a printer session must be configured on the 3270 startup line (NSM Startup Programs or Startup Menus; -PRINTER_GENERAL or -PRINTER_APP is required). See the following URL for information on configuring a TN3270E printer: TN3270E documentation can be found by going to http://www.ibm.com/nc/pubs . Go into IBM Network Station Manager, SC41-0664. Appendix F has TN3270E documentation.

If a PDT is going to be used, -PDT must also be entered into the same 3270 startup line as -PRINTER_GENERAL or -PRINTER_APP. -PDT does not have a parameter that follows it (-PRINTER_GENERAL and -PRINTER_APP do have a parameter). The Network Station 3270 emulator uses PCOMM or HoD Printer Definition Files (PDF). PDF source files are used on the Network Station and can be edited if necessary. Place the desired PDF source file (or files) in the following directory: "NSM_ADMIN_SYSDEFAULTS"/NS3270/PDT . The /PDT subdirectory may need to be created.

A PDT table also needs to be created and stored in the same directory as the PDF file. The PDT table file name must be PDT.819.

The PDT.819 file must contain the following data: "Printer_desc" PDF_file_name *all . There can be multiple lines in the PDF.819 file, if the PDF is to apply to multiple printer descriptions or multiple PDFs are required to multiple printers.

"Printer_desc" is case sensitive and must be within double quotes. "Printer_desc" should exactly match the text entered into NSM Hardware/Printers in the 'Description (optional)' entry field.

PDF_file_name is the name of your PDF file (*all indicates that any user with a -PDT startup line should use the PDF when printing to the specified printer). If necessary, *all can be replaced by a user id or user ids that should use the PDF.

When a 3270 print is done, if -PDT is specified on the 3270 startup line, the file PDT.819 is read. If a "Printer_desc" line in the file matches the printer to be used for the 3270 print, then the PDF file is read and used.

Note: Support for PDTs was PTF'ed into Rel 3, so no external documentation exists yet. In a future release, we plan to have 3270 PDT support documented and may ship some (approximately 40) PCOMM/HoD PDF files with the Network Station product.
