Use this information if a problem occurs and you have to reinstall Windows 98. This document contains the following information:

- About the Microsoft Windows 98 CD
- Reinstalling from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD - This section includes instructions for changing the startup sequence of your drives.
- Reinstalling from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD and Startup Disk - This section includes instructions for adding device drivers to the Startup Disk.

About the Microsoft Windows 98 CD

Attention: The software contained on the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM (the "Recovery Program") is to be used
only for reinstalling Windows 98 on an IBM computer that was originally shipped with Windows 98 preinstalled.

The Microsoft Windows 98 CD is provided with your computer so that you can reinstall Windows 98 in case of a hard disk failure or other damage to your Windows 98 files. The CD is startable, so the Startup Disk is required only if your CD-ROM drive cannot be used as the startup device.

If you reinstall Windows 98 from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD, the content will differ slightly from the preinstalled Windows 98 software that was originally shipped with your computer.

After you have reinstalled Windows 98, you can use the Ready-to-Configure Utility Program CD to install applications and device drivers if necessary. Refer to your About Your Software booklet and the CD overview on the Ready-to-Configure Utility Program CD for more information. If you experience problems with device drivers installed from the Ready-to-Configure Utility Program CD, you can obtain updated device drivers from the IBM PC Support page at http://www.pc.ibm.com/support.

You can create the Startup Disk from any computer running Windows 98. Instructions for creating the Startup Disk are in "Creating the Startup Disk" below.

Note: The Microsoft Windows 98 CD and the Startup Disk are intended for use only with IDE and SCSI CD-ROM drives. If you have any other type of CD-ROM drive, you must add the device driver for your CD-ROM drive to
the Startup Disk. See "Adding Device Drivers to the Startup Disk" below.

Reinstalling from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD

The Microsoft Windows 98 CD provided with your computer is startable, so the Startup Disk is not required in most cases. However, you must change the startup sequence in the Configuration/Setup utility program so that the computer recognizes the CD-ROM drive as a startup device (see "Changing the Startup Sequence" below).

Requirements

To reinstall Windows 98, you must have:

- A CD-ROM drive configured as the second startup device (see "Changing the Startup Sequence" below)
- A hard disk drive configured as the third startup device
- The Microsoft Windows 98 CD

Changing the Startup Sequence

To start the computer from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD, the CD-ROM drive must be configured as the second startup device, and the hard disk drive must be configured as the third startup device.

1. Turn off the computer, and then turn on the computer.
2. When you see the message "Press F1 for Configuration/Setup," press F1.
3. When the Configuration/Setup Utility menu appears, select Start Options.
4. From the Start Options menu, select Startup Sequence. Note the devices selected as the Second Startup Device and the Third Startup Device. Later, you must restore these settings.
5. Select CD ROM as the Second Startup Device.
6. Select Hard Disk 0 as the Third Startup Device.
7. Press Esc two times to return to the Configuration/Setup Utility menu.
8. Select Yes, save and exit the Setup Utility, and press Enter. The computer restarts.

Attention: When you finish reinstalling Windows 98, you must restore the Second Startup Device and the Third Startup Device back to the original settings. See "Restoring the Original Startup Sequence" below.

Reinstalling Windows 98

1. While the computer is turned on, insert the Microsoft Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Turn off the computer, and then turn on the computer.
3. In the first screen, type 2 (Boot from CD-ROM), and press Enter.
4. In the next screen, type 1 (Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM), and press Enter.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: If the hard disk has no active partition, the Setup program formats the hard disk before beginning the installation process. If the message "Please make sure Windows 98 Boot Disk is in drive A" is displayed, disregard it and press Enter. The computer restarts. In the first screen, type 2 (Boot from CD-ROM), and press Enter. In the next screen, type 1 (Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM), and press Enter. The hard disk is formatted, and then installation of Windows 98 begins.
6. In each of the Windows 98 Setup windows, make your selection or type the requested information, and follow the prompts. Accept the Microsoft license agreement, and type the Product ID number from the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity when you are prompted to do so. (The Certificate of Authenticity is attached to the front cover of your Windows 98 manual.)
7. Click on Finish to restart the computer and begin the hardware setup. Follow the prompts to complete the hardware setup. You might have to restart the computer more than once during the hardware setup. Each time, type 1 (Boot from Hard Disk) at the first screen displayed after the computer restarts. If you are prompted for the location of files,
type e:\WIN98 (where e is the CD-ROM drive letter), and click on OK. When the hardware setup is completed, the Windows 98 desktop is displayed.
8. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive.

Restoring the Original Startup Sequence

When the Windows 98 reinstallation is complete, restore the original startup sequence.

1. Turn off the computer, and then turn on the computer.
2. When you see the message "Press F1 for Configuration/Setup," press F1.
3. When the Configuration/Setup Utility menu appears, select Start Options.
4. From the Start Options menu, select Startup Sequence.
5. For the Second Startup Device, select the device that was assigned before you changed it to CD ROM.
6. For the Third Startup Device, select the device that was assigned before you changed it to Hard Disk 0. (This might happen automatically when you reassign the Second Startup Device.)
7. Press Esc two times to return to the Configuration/Setup Utility menu.
8. Select Yes, save and exit the Setup Utility, and press Enter. The computer restarts.

Reinstalling from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD and the Startup Disk

The Microsoft Windows 98 CD provided with your computer is startable, so the Startup Disk is required only if your CD-ROM drive cannot be used as the startup device.

Creating the Windows 98 Startup Disk

You can create a Windows 98 Startup Disk from any computer running Windows 98. You need one blank diskette. Do the following:

1. From the Windows 98 desktop, click on the Start button.
2. Click on Start Programs.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
5. Click on the Startup Disk tab.
6. Click on Create Disk, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Attention: Before you begin the reinstallation process, make a backup copy of the Startup Disk, and use the backup copy during the reinstallation process to avoid the possibility of damaging your original copy of the Startup Disk.

Adding Device Drivers to the Startup Disk

The Microsoft Windows 98 CD and the Startup Disk are intended for use only with IDE and SCSI CD-ROM drives. If you have any other type of CD-ROM drive, you must use the Startup Disk and add the device driver for your drive to it.

1. From an A: prompt, edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the Startup Disk.
2. For each device driver you need to add to the diskette, add a line as follows:

DEVICE=xxxxxxxx.SYS /D:OEMCD001

(Where xxxxxxxx is the device driver name. )

3. Save the CONFIG.SYS file.
4. Copy your device driver file or files to the Startup Disk.

Note: If the diskette does not have enough space for your device drivers, you can delete all ASPI*.SYS files from the diskette and delete the corresponding "DEVICE=" statements from the CONFIG.SYS file.

Requirements

To reinstall Windows 98 using the Startup Disk, you must have:

- A CD-ROM drive
- Diskette drive A configured as the first startup device
- The Microsoft Windows 98 CD
- A backup copy of the Windows 98 Startup Disk (see "Creating the Windows 98 Startup Disk" below)

Reinstalling Windows 98

1. While the computer is turned on, insert the Startup Disk into the diskette drive, and insert the Microsoft Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Turn off the computer, and then turn on the computer.
3. In the first screen, type 1 (Start computer with CD-ROM support), and press Enter.
4. After you see the message indicating that the diagnostic tools are loaded, look at the MSCDEX message and note which drive letter is assigned to the CD-ROM drive.
5. At the A: prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive (type the CD-ROM drive letter, and press Enter).
6. Type SETUP, and press Enter.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
8. When ScanDisk is completed, highlight Exit (using the right or left arrow key), and press Enter.
10. Click on Finish to restart the computer and begin the hardware setup. Follow the prompts to complete the hardware setup. If you are prompted for the location of files, type e:\WIN98 (where e is the CD-ROM drive letter), and click on OK. When the hardware setup is completed, the Windows 98 desktop is displayed.
11. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive.
