Aptiva - 2137 system hang after Windows 98 Upgrade

Applicable to: World-Wide

Customers have been experiencing system lockups after installing the IBM Windows 98 Upgrade provided as part of the IBM Windows 98 Upgrade coupon offer. After installing the Windows 98 Upgrade customer's system locks up at the Windows 98 start up splash screen.

The lockup is caused by the Windows 98 ALi IDE device driver enabling DMA Mode on the CD-ROM drive.

To correct the error and prevent further system lockups, please follow the steps below.
1) Turn the system on.
2) From the Windows 98 splash screen lockup press CTRL-ALT+DEL to reboot the system.
3) The system will reboot to the Windows 98 Start Up Menu. Select option 1 ćNormal ModeĆ by pressing the number 1 on the keyboard, then press Enter.
4) From the Windows 98 desktop, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System to open the Device Manager.
5) From Device Manager, find the entry labeled CD-ROM Drives and click the plus symbol next to that entry.
6) Click to highlight the entry labeled, E-IDE CD-ROM 24X/AKOx, and click Properties.
7) From the CD-ROM Properties menu choose the Settings tab.
8) From the CD-ROM settings tab put a check mark in the box labeled DMA Mode.
9) A dialog box will appear with the message "Changing this setting may have undesirable effects..." ignore this message and click Ok. There should now be a check mark in the box labeled DMA Mode.
10) Remove the check mark from the box labeled DMA Mode that was placed during step 9.
11) Click Ok.
12) Click Close.
13) Click Yes, when asked to reboot the system.
The system will reboot and will now operate properly.

Note: Windows 98 is actually enabling DMA Mode contrary to what is displayed in the DMA Mode entry under the CD-ROM Properties menu, Settings tab. Selecting and deselecting DMA Mode causes the Windows 98 registry to be reset with the correct values.
