IBM PC - Microsoft Windows 95/Windows NT CD-ROM installation guide

Applicable to: World-Wide

After physically installing your CD-ROM drive, start Windows 95 or Windows NT. The operating system should recognize the new drive and install the device drivers for it.

If Windows 95 or Windows NT is unable to recognize the new CD-ROM drive, from the Control Panel, double-click on Add New Hardware, and have the operating system search for the drive. There is no method for manually installing IDE CD-ROM drive device drivers for Windows 95 or Windows NT. If the operating system is unable to recognize the drive and automatically install the device drivers for it, you will be unable to use the CD-ROM drive until you correct the problem.

If the operating system is unable to automatically detect your IDE CD-ROM drive, one of the following problems might exist:

- The Windows 95 or Windows NT IDE controller device drivers are not installed correctly.
- The system configuration is not complete.
- There is a resource conflict.
- There is a problem with the CD-ROM drive.

Try one or more of the following to solve the problem:

- If Windows 95 does not recognize the CD-ROM drive, verify that the CD-ROM drive is listed in the System Summary in the Configuration/Setup Utility program.

- If the CD-ROM drive is listed in the System Summary, check for a resource conflict.

- If any non-Plug and Play device is assigned to Interrupt 15, shut down the computer and change the assignment for that device.

- If Windows 95 has assigned any other device to Interrupt 15, change the resources assigned to that device. From the Control Panel, double-click on System, click on the Device Manager tab, and double-click on Computer. This displays a window that lists all system resources. From that window, you can view and change interrupt request (IRQ), input/output (I/O), direct memory access (DMA), and memory resource assignments.

- Make sure that the correct number of IDE controllers are listed in the Input/output (I/O) selection of the system resources listing.

- Make sure that the correct or latest Windows 95 or Windows NT IDE controller device drivers are installed in the computer.

If Windows 95 or Windows NT does not have the appropriate device driver for your CD-ROM drive, obtain a device driver diskette from the manufacturer. After you start the operating system, insert the diskette into drive A, and click on Have Disk. The device drivers will be installed from the diskette.
