Aptiva - I can't get my older monitor to work with my new Aptiva

Applicable to: World-Wide

All PC's preloaded with Windows 98 have a video resolution preset at 800 x 600 x 16 million colors to meet Microsoft requirements.
Many older monitor aren't capable of handling this type of resolution and will either have bad or no video in Windows 98.
You may change the original video settings to something more compatible with your existing monitor but this will not allow you
to take full advantage of your new PC's capabilities.
For information on booting Windows 98 into safe mode, follow this link and follow the instructions listed in the attached document. .

From within safe mode do the following to get to the video settings.

1. Click "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel", and then double-click the "Display" icon.

2. The "Display Properties" screen will appear. Click the "Settings" tab.

3. Change the color depth by clicking the arrow on the right-hand side of the "Color Palette" list box. A list of available color depths will be displayed, select "16 Color" from the list.

4. Change the screen area by moving the slider under "Screen" all the way to the left. You will see "Screen: 640 x 480" above the slider.

5. Move the slider above "Desktop" all the way to the left as well. You will see "Desktop: 640 x 480" below the slider.

6. Now click the down arrow next to color palette.

7. Make sure "16 color is selected by clicking on it with the mouse.

8. Click "OK" in the "Display Properties" Window. If you have changed the color depth, a "System Settings Change" message box will appear stating that you must restart the computer for the new settings to take effect.

9. Click "Yes" to restart the computer.

This should allow your system to function with a VGA monitor.

Note: Depending on the type of video adapter installed in the Computer, some of the steps above may vary.
Not all monitors will function with all Computers, please consult your monitor users guide supplied by the monitor manufacturer compatible settings.
