TP 755C/CS - Audio Driver installation instructions for Windows 95

You may encounter "Unknown Hardware Found" message when you install Windows 95. In this case, select "Do not install a driver (Windows will not prompt you again)". By doing this, you will see "Unknown Device" under "Other devices" in Windows 95 Device Manager. This "Unknown Device" is ThinkPad Audio device.
The ThinkPad Audio Support Software for Windows 3.1x works on Windows 95. If you install Windows 95 over a DOS/Windows 3.x system on which you have already installed ThinkPad Audio Support Software, it is migrated into "Start Menu" automatically. Click "Start"; click "Programs"; then click "Audio" to select the ThinkPad audio program which you use.
If you install Windows 95 on a blank hard disk, then before installing the audio drivers, you should have the ThinkPad Features Program already installed.
Important!
Before installing ThinkPad Audio support software, you have to verify that your ThinkPad has CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of C:\. Also you might need to install Audio support software twice to get it work correctly.
Installing the Audio Driver:
1. Start Windows 95 in MSDOS Mode, START -> Shutdown -> Restart in MSDOS Mode.
2. Insert the ThinkPad Audio Features diskette into the diskette drive.
3. Type A:\SETUP and accept the defaults. Also be sure to select Yes for install of Sound Blaster support.
4. Reboot the computer and stay inside Windows.
5. Select Start then Run and type A:\WINSETUP.
6. Accept all of the defaults and when completed perform a Shutdown and reboot.
7. That completes the Audio install, if you still have no audio support re-run A:\WINSETUP. There have been some reports that under Windows 95 a double install is needed.
Note: For DOS mode Sound Blaster support you need to run SVAUDIO.EXE first. This is located in C:\IBMAUDIO\VDD directory.
ThinkPad Audio Support Software setup makes several program icons to use ThinkPad audio functions. The "Sound Recorder" icon, which works fine under Windows 3.1, is not set up correctly under Windows 95 because the program name of Windows sound record utility is changed.
To setup "Sound Recorder" icon:
1. Verify that you have successfully installed or migrated ThinkPad Audio Support Software onto Windows.
- Click "Start"; click "Programs"; then click "Audio"
- "Audio Control", "Media Player", "Sound Recorder" and "Read Me" programs should be visible. If not, you need to reinstall ThinkPad Audio Support Software.
2. Click "Start"; click "Settings"; then click "Taskbar..."
3. Click on "Start Menu Programs" tab.
4. Click "Advanced..." button.
5. Click "+" mark of "Programs" in the hierarchy window located left-hand side; then click "Audio".
6. Highlight "Sound Recorder" in the content window located right-hand side; click "File" menu; then click "Properties".
7. Click on "Shortcut" tab; and change "Target" program name from "SOUNDREC.EXE" to "C:\WINDOWS\SNDREC32.EXE". (C:\WINDOWS could be different depending on the subdirectory in which you installed Windows 95.)
8. Click "OK"; now you can use "Sound Recorder" under Windows 95.
Drivers:
CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=C:\IBMAUDIO\AUDIODD\TPAUDDD.SYS
DEVICE=C:\IBMAUDIO\DIAG\AUDTEST.SYS /V=10 *NOTE: When executed the system will play an audio tune indicating that the audio device is present.

UNKNOWN DEVICE Procedure:
In Device Manager, you may see a section called "Unknown Hardware". This is actually the Audio device. To update Device Manger so that it recognizes the Audio device correct follow the steps below.
If you want to fix this problem, you first need to modify a Win95 information file in a hidden directory. If you are not familiar with Windows 95 or you are a non-experienced PC / Windows user, it's not recommended to do the following. Unexpected results may occur if you cannot follow the instructions correctly.
1. Go to MS-DOS Prompt
2. Type "CD INF" and press Enter to go to the subdirectory
C:\WINDOWS\INF. (Note that C:\WINDOWS\INF is a hidden directory)
3. Back up NODRIVER.INF. Type "COPY NODRIVER.INF NODRIVER.BAK".
These *.INF files are very important for Windows 95 Device Manager and you need to save the original one.
4. Edit NODRIVER.INF. Type "EDIT NODRIVER.INF" and press Enter.
5. Search [Manufacturer] section; Find the following statement.
%IBMMfg%=IBM
If you can find it, go to the next step. Otherwise, add this statement in [Manufacturer] section.
6. Search [IBM] section; if you don't find it, add [IBM] section somewhere between [Manufacturer] and [NODRIVER] section; find the following statement.
%*IBM0040.DeviceDesc%=NODRIVER,*IBM0040
If you cannot find it, simply add this statement in [IBM] section. Otherwise, go to the next step.
7. Search [String] section; find 'IBMMfg="IBM"' statement; after this line, find the following statement.
*IBM0040.DeviceDesc="xxxxxx" (xxxxxx is some device name)
If you find it, change it to as follows.
*IBM0040.DeviceDesc="ThinkPad Audio Device"
8. Save the modified NODRIVER.INF file. And exit MS-DOS prompt.
Next, you need to remove "Unknown Device" (or "Mwave DSP") from Device Manager. Then need to refresh the hardware structure.
9. Click "My Computer"
10. Click "Control Panel"
11. Click "System"
12. Click on "Device Manager" tab
13. Click "+" mark of "Other devices"; you see "Unknown Device" (or "Mwave DSP processor").
14. Click on "Unknown Device" (or "Mwave DSP") and click "Remove" button; click "OK" to confirm.
15. Click "Refresh" button; Windows 95 will restructure the device tree in "Device Manager" and you now should see "ThinkPad Audio Device" under "Other detected devices".
<Important!>
If you encounter any unexpected results by doing the above, you might have failed to modify your NODRIVER.INF file correctly. You should recover your original NODRIVER.INF from NODRIVER.BAK which you've saved. Rename NODRIVER.BAK to NODRIVER.INF and do the above steps again, if desired.
