Aptiva - Considerations with serial port and Lucent WinModem

Applicable to: World-Wide

In Windows 95, the Lucent Winmodem and system serial port use the following resources:

Device

Resources

Lucent Modem

COM1 | I/O 378h | IRQ 4

External Serial Port

COM2 | I/O 278h | IRQ 3

When rebooting into MS-DOS mode, you must run a TSR utility to enable the modem. The TSR will be in either c:\windows\options\cabs, or c:\windows\system

For 2140/2142/2137 this is LTTSR.EXE
For 2161/2162 this is LEPNPTSR.EXE
However, if you have a 2161/62 and you install the V3.30 driver, you will have to use LTTSR.EXE.

In MS-DOS mode, the modem and serial port use the following resources:

DOS Mode with no EMS memory - Plug and Play Operating System DISABLED

Device

Resources

External Serial Port

COM1 | I/O 378h | IRQ 4

Lucent Modem

NOT ENABLED - TSR CANNOT RUN

DOS Mode with EMS memory - Plug and Play Operating System DISABLED

Device

Resources

External Serial Port

COM1 | I/O 378h | IRQ 4

Lucent Modem

not enabled until TSR runs

(after running TSR)
Lucent Modem

COM1 | I/O 378h | IRQ 4 - and now external serial port is disabled

Note: If Plug and Play Operating System is ENABLED then the external serial port will never be available.
