TITLE

IBM ThinkPad 770 -- Focusing on Power, Performance, Connectivity, and Configuration Flexibility

OVERVIEW

Experience the ultimate in mobile computing -- a high level of processing power in a sleek, compact notebook approximately 3.62kg or 7.9 pounds (3.4kg or 7.4 pounds without the FDD). The ThinkPad 770 (9549) model has an extra large 358.1mm (14.1-inch) TFT display. In addition, the ThinkPad 770 ( 9548) model has a .337.8mm (13.3-inch) (measured diagonally) TFT display with significantly improved brightness when compared to previous ThinkPads. Another benefit is the power of a fast mobile processor -- a 233MHz or 200MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology and 512KB of L2 cache, depending upon model.

Multimedia enabled...brilliant display, 3D graphics, high-impact SRS 3D audio, MMX, and Sound Blaster audio support. The new optional DVD and Enhanced Video Adapter provides full MPEG-2 multimedia and DVD (Digital Video Disc) drive support. These ThinkPad 770 models can support up to a 20X maximum variable speed CD-ROM drive.

ADDITIONAL STANDARD FEATURES

- Preinstalled Windows 95 with selected applications or Windows Workstation NT with advanced NT extensions, depending upon model

- UltraBay II with a new, easy-to-use, side loading tray

- A 5.1GB 4.0GB or 3.2GB hard disk drive (HDD) is standard, depending upon model

- 32MB of fast SDRAM memory is standard. The IBM ThinkPad 770 has been designed to recognize up to 256MB of addressable memory. Current available memory options allow memory expansion up to 160MB using two 64MB SDRAM SO DIMMs in the two available slots for memory expansion. Memory expansion beyond 160MB will depend on the availability of memory options larger than 64MB SDRAM SO DIMMs. Such availability cannot be guaranteed.

- Keyboard with larger built-in palm rest, when compared to previous ThinkPads, and IBM TrackPoint with enhanced features, such as Press-to-Select and Scroll-and-Select.

Also announced today is a new model of the ThinkPad 770 just for the IBM Business Partner - PC, Authorized Assembler Program (AAP). This new model is shipped without a hard disk drive or software preinstalled. A selection of hardware optional features and operating systems is available . Please refer to the Description section for additional information.

The IBM Business Partner - PC Authorized Assembler Program is a fulfilment initiative that supports IBM authorized business partner requirements to provide high-quality, customized solutions to customers. The program offers the qualified business partner the potential for greater inventory flexibility by performing final product assembly and testing of select IBM personal computers to specific customer orders closer to the time of distribution and end-user installation. KEYBOARD AND TRACKPOINT WITH ENHANCED FEATURES:
The keyboard has the familiar layout of a ThinkPad with a function key capability that allows you to quickly access system functions, such as power management control, and there is a larger palm-rest area. The TrackPoint with enhanced features incorporates the new "Press-to- Select" and optional "Release-to-Select" function of the TrackPoint. There is also a new center button for the new Scrolling and Magnifying Glass ease of use enhancements.

PROCESSOR: These systems, depending upon model, have a 200MHz or 233MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology, 512KB of L2 cache, and floating-point decimal providing exceptional performance.

MEMORY: The ThinkPad 770 systems are designed to use the new fast 144-pin, 2 64-bit SDRAM SO DIMM, 3 V, non-parity memory. 32MB of new, fast SDRAM SO DIMM system memory (RAM) is standard.

PCMCIA: The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two Type II, or one Type III PC card. The slot will support the CardBus adapters PC card and the new ZV (Zoomed Video) adapter.

NOTE: Presently available in DOS, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95.

STORAGE: The customer-removable, customer-installable standard hard drive is 5.1 GB, 4.0GB or 3.2GB standard, depending upon model. The drive is easily removed by the UltraBay II release lever. This is only true for 2nd Hard Drives, the first HD is removed by taking out a thumb screw and pulling out the drive. The new 1.44MB FDD comes standard and it can either be plugged directly into its bay in the ThinkPad 770 or used externally with the cable that is supplied with the system. It comes in its own enclosure.

THINKPAD ULTRABAY II: The ThinkPad UltraBay II, also standard with the system, is an intelligent bay that switches its pinout signals to allow the installation of standard and optional features, such as, an FDD, second Li-Ion battery, second HDD, or 20X max. variable speed CD-ROM, in what would normally be just the FDD bay. It will hold a DVD drive, or ZIP drive, when it becomes available. It also can hold the 760 family hard disk drive options if the ThinkPad 770 Second HDD adapter option is used. The installation of a second hard drive in the UltraBay II requires the ThinkPad 770
Second HDD Adapter optional feature. The new Ultrabay II is easy to access because a tray slides out when the release lever is pulled, allowing easy access to add or remove items.

MULTIMEDIA CAPABILITY: Consider the optional DVD and Enhanced Video Adapter Upgrade if you need more advanced and integrated multimedia capability -- 3D audio, and video combined. The integrated Dolby Digital sound provides five (5) discreet channels and with a customer supplied amplifier and speakers you can enjoy the richness of Dolby sound. This option supports total Image Video with MPEG-1 and full MPEG-2 support, and other features.

AUDIO: The audio capability on the system board and the integrated microphone allow voice annotation and audio capability. The system is equipped with audio in/out jacks for stereo speakers, headphone, or external microphone. A separate dial volume control is located to the side of the keyboard on the system. The system supports SRS 3D audio and Sound Blaster audio applications.

VIDEO: The new ThinkPad 770 systems have 3D graphics capability, providing exceptional video performance and use with 3D Web sites, business applications, and 3D video games. It has 2MB of video RAM.

INFRARED: The systems have fast (4.0Mbps) IR transceivers in front and back for wireless file and data transfer and printing. The ThinkPad 770 is designed for compliance with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) IR datalink specification Version 1.1. The system supports three modes of operation:

- IrDA 1.1 (up to 4Mbps)
- HP mode (from 9600 bps to 115 Kbps)
- Sharp mode (9600 bps)

OTHER FEATURES: The ThinkPad 770 systems have the full complement of ports (enhanced parallel, serial, and external display). The FDD external attachment port is standard on all 770 models. In addition, a 240-pin connector
supports the following ThinkPad IBM docking solutions:

IBM SelectaBase 770
IBM SelectaDock I
IBM SelectaDock II
IBM SelectaDock III

- 800 x 600 resolution and 16M colors
- 1600x 1200 resolution and 256 colors
- All 16 color modes virtual screen mode (such as 1280 x 1024 on an LCD)
- CD-i Interactive is not supported.
- Video Capture driver is not supported on OS/2 Warp Version 3.
- 1024 x 768 256 color mode is recommended for better motion video quality of MPEG-2/DVD playback.
- IBM MPEG2 and ZV card cannot be used simultaneously. Some ZV cards reserve VRAM for its use when installed in the ZV Port. When using MPEG2, remove the ZV card from the ZV Port.

Video Restrictions
- 3D acceleration is supported under Windows 95 and Windows NT only.
- 3D acceleration is supported in 64K and 16M color modes only.

Other Windows 95 Limitations
- When you enable the USB controller, you have the following limitations:
1. System does not suspend as setup for scheduled/time-out suspend.
2. You cannot do hot dock/undock or warm dock/undock. The system may hang if you hot/warm dock/undock the system.
3. Battery life will be 15 to 30 minutes shorter with the USB port enabled.
4. You cannot use both of PCI video adapter and PCI network card at the same time in the docking station. The system does not boot if both of them are installed in the docking station.

- The Intel USB camera attached to the system will be disabled, when a suspend is tried, but rejected by system due to on-going activities. To correct this problem unplug the USB camera from the USB port, then plug it again.
- When the system is in standby mode, hot plugging/unplugging of network PCMCIA R2 cards is not supported in the docking station slots after the system is resumed from standby.
- A storage PCMCIA card in the docking station slots loses the drive letter assignment if the system does the sequence of standby/resume, then suspend/resume standby/resume. Rebooting the system will solve this situation.
- When one CardBus card is already configured in either system slot or docking station slot, you need to configure the second CardBus card using the Control System icon Panel. The second CardBus card cannot be configured automatically.

OTHER OS/2 LIMITATIONS
- When using Warp Version 3, the OS/2 Warp FixPak XR_W030 or later is required.
- OS/2's native mouse driver does not work with ThinkPad 770. TrackPoint driver must be used.

WINDOWS NT WORKSTATION LIMITATIONS
- In Windows NT 3.51 and NT 4.0, hibernation is not supported when the drive is formatted for NTFS.
- Enhanced video and MPEG-2 NT features will be available by 12/19/97.

SUSPEND/RESUME LIMITATIONS
- RI resume is not supported under Windows 95 native. CardWorks is required to get this function.
- Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode.
- When using a ThinkPad modem, modem must be set up as 'hardware FIFO' enabled, or 'hardware flow control' enabled, or UART 16550A mode, otherwise a fax or modem incoming call cannot be received during suspend mode. On Windows 95 and Windows NT, this mode is enabled as default. For OS/2 or DOS/Windows 3.1, set up may be in the application settings For example, OS/2 FaxWorks has settings (Utilities - Settings - Modem Type
- Use HW FIFO (16550A))

OTHER LIMITATIONS
- IRQ sharing between DSP and Modem is supported under Windows 95 only.
- Under OS/2 Win-OS2 session, TrackPoint Scrolling function is not supported.
- Double-click on the objects in the TrackPoint Magnifying Glass window does not work.
- IBM VoiceType Dictation 3.0 is not supported on the ThinkPad 770.
- LANDesk Client Manger (LDCM) cannot be installed if NetFinity has already been installed. NetFinity and LDCM may conflict with each other.

SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL

STANDARD SECURITY FEATURES: The electronic personalization feature is like a name tag on your ThinkPad. Your name, contact address, or phone number can be displayed on the screen when the system is turned on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system's non-volatile memory and is displayed with a password prompt.

Passwords
There are a number of password protection mechanisms available to the user:
- Power on passwords - to protect the system from unauthorized use
- Supervisor password - for use by a system administrator
- HDD password - to protect the data on the removable HDD

In addition, a locking device can be used in the IBM Security slot to provide physical security.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

Warranty Period

WARRANTY SERVICE
Customer Carry-in Repair (CCR) or ThinkPad EasyServ: Warranty service for the ThinkPad 770 models will be provided by ThinkPad EasyServ or CCR to an authorized dealer/remarketer. ThinkPad EasyServ is a courier repair service in which the ThinkPad system will be picked up at the customer's location and delivered to a IBM-designated repair location. The repair location will repair the system and return it to the customer. Charges for the courier service will be paid by IBM.

If information on terms and conditions or warranty service is required, the customer should call the HelpCenter at 800-772-2227, in the U.S.A. The HelpCenter will assist the user with problem isolation for hardware. If a hardware problem is identified, the HelpCenter will arrange for a courier to pick up the system for overnight delivery (where available) to the repair location. Most repairs should be made the same day the system is received at the repair location (actual repair time may vary). Customers should keep the original shipping carton for shipping to the repair location. If the original shipping carton is not available, the courier will deliver a shipping carton and return to pick up the system for delivery to the repair location.

ThinkPad EasyServ is available in the U.S.A., Canada, and Mexico.

INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY SERVICE
Customers who travel or need to move products to another country will be able to register the products for IBM International Warranty Service. Upon registering with the International Warranty Service Office (IWSO), IBM will issue an International Warranty Service Certificate that will be honored virtually worldwide, where IBM or IBM reseller sell and service IBM PC products. During the original warranty period, customers will be provided service through the service delivery methods available for their specific IBM system in the servicing country.
