THINKPAD 380E/380ED FEATURES

LCD DISPLAY:

These systems come with an 800 X 600 resolution, 12.1-inch(measured diagonally) TFT or new FRSTN (Fast Response Super Twisted Nematic) displays with up to 64K colors that provide superior viewing
capability. The FRSTN models have vastly better contrast and twice the screen refresh speed of previous DSTN models (improved from 300ms to150MS).

KEYBOARD AND TRACKPOINT III:

The keyboard has the familiar layout of a ThinkPad with a function key capability that allows you to quickly access system functions, such as power management control. The TrackPoint III is an enhanced TrackPoint(TM) II with an improved non-slip TrackPoint cap and more accurate pointing capability through improved software.

PROCESSOR:

These systems have a 166MHz or 150MHz Pentium processor with 256KB L2 cache with MMX technology for additional performance. MMX is a set of Intel processor instructions providing performance enhancements for multimedia applications.

MEMORY:

The ThinkPad 380E/380ED systems are designed to use non-parity, 64-bit EDO SO DIMM memory. Standard memory is 16MB and can be expanded to a maximum of 80MB with 8MB, 16MB, 32MB or 64MB cards. An internal slot provides for one extra memory module for users who need more mem-
ory.

PCMCIA:

The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two Type II, or one Type III PC card. System Soft PCMCIA software is preinstalled and provides support for the latest PCMCIA standard, 2.1. This software enables many PCMCIA cards, allowing you to simply plug in the card. The bottom PCMCIA slot also contains a ZV port.

PC CARD SUPPORT SOFTWARE:

IBM ThinkPad 380E/380ED comes with software that helps you get status and information on PCMCIA cards installed in
the system, and that makes installation and use of PC Cards much easier. The Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver enables supported PCMCIA cards by sensing them automatically. (PCMCIA cards supported by the Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver are listed in the Sales Man ual.)

STORAGE:

The systems have a dealer/service-replaceable 2.1GB, 3.0GB, or 5.1GB HDD. You can upgrade to an optional 5.1GB HDD. All are S.M.A.R.T. HDDs that give an alert if a failure is pending. 1.44MB FDD is standard. The three-spindle design of this system allows all the drive units, including the FDD to be included inside the ThinkPad
380E/380ED covers.

MPEG 1:

Software MPEG 1 support on Windows 95 systems provides multimedia viewing capability without hardware prerequisites like a ZV Port card. MPEG 1 decoders facilitate educational use for activities, such as movies, teleconferencing, and games.

CD-ROM:

You have the option to upgrade your IBM ThinkPad 380E (by IBM authorized service personnel only) to an eight-speed CD-ROM. 8-20 speed

AUDIO:

The ThinkPad 380E/380ED systems support Sound Blaster Pro applications, and come with a built-in speaker and microphone. The systems are also equipped with two jacks. One is for external stereo speakers or a headphone. The second jack is for an external microphone. A separate dial volume control is located toward the rear on the side of the
keyboard.

VIDEO:

The ThinkPad 380E/380ED systems have PCI bus support with video acceleration, providing exceptional video performance.

INFRARED:

The systems have an IR transceiver for wireless file and data
transfer and printing. The ThinkPad 380E/380ED models are designed to be compatible with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) IR data link specification with speeds up to 4 Mbps.

OTHER FEATURES:

The systems have the full complement of ports -- en-
hanced parallel port, SVGA (external display), pointer-keyboard-keypad, and serial. An additional connector supports the ThinkPad 380E/380ED port replicator.

Preinstalled software provides wireless file transfer, file synchronization, and clipboard data transfer. With the IR feature, data can be ex changed with any system, cessories, or personal digital assistants (PDAS) supporting the same specifications and data transfer speed. The IR feature may require the separate purchase of the appropriate hardware.

If you experience this problem, open My Computer, open Control Panel, open System Icon, click on Device Manager Tab and then click Refresh.

Welcome screen and Tutorial are restricted in 640 x 480 x 16M color on OS/2.

TranXit for Windows 95 cannot communicate with TranXit for OS/2.

APM.SYS in OS/2 Warp 4 does not issue resume notifications upon suspend/resume events on the second time and after. Typical symptoms are:

- The system does not resume upon ring indicator after second in-coming call
- Audio playback does not work after second resume event. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09440.

OS/2 Warp 4 boot fails very intermittently. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09461.

IBM PCMCIA Infrared Wireless LAN Adapter is not recognized when it is used with Adaptec SCSI device driver AHA152X.ADD on OS/2 Warp 4. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09462.

Some IBM Auto 16/4 Credit Card Token-Ring Adapters may fail to con nect to the network intermittently with IBMTOKCS.OS2 driver in OS/2 Warp 4. If you experience this problem, get Version 2.054 of IBMTOKCS.OS2 driver on the Internet at: http://www.raleigh.ibm.com/nes/neshome.html

TCP/IP protocol is not removed correctly when LAN Distance support is already installed on OS/2 Warp 4, and you try to remove TCP/IP protocol. As a result, the system encounters Trap D upon next boot. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR IC15805.

Use boot manager when booting OS/2 Warp from a secondary drive, such as the PCMCIA Type III drive.

When using Windows 95 or OS/2 Warp 3, a suspend/resume operation during AVI file, MIDI, WAV, or other audio feature operation may cause an audio/video synchronous problem or the application to hang. The application should be closed before entering a suspend.

Some optional features or applications may use the COM2 port. OS/2 Warp 3 will not load COM.SYS if the COM2 port is already in use. Only one such feature or application that uses the COM2 (for example, communications or PCMCIA) can be used at a time.

The OS/2 Warp FixPak XR0W009 is required for audio and video support for Indeo**-format video file playback functions.

When OS/2 Warp 4 is installed, the following error message appears intermittently and the installation may fail. "MOUSE$ is not functioning" If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09480.

OS/2 Warp 4 boot takes very long on the Pentium 150MHz with MMX technology system when the hard disk is FAT. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09481.

When a music CD is played and "digital transfer" option is selected, main volume control does not work properly on OS/2 Warp 4. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09564.

In "Digital Audio" applet in OS/2 Warp 4, unsupported record format like 4-bit ADPCM can be selected. When audio data is recorded with unsupported format, the data becomes unusable. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09565.

"Digital Audio" applet in OS/2 Warp 4 does not show correct position locator when MIDI files are played. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09566.

If you do not follow the instructions of CS4236 audio driver installation on OS/2 Warp 4, the reinstallation of OS/2 Warp 4 may be required. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09567.

On OS/2 Warp 4, when an FDD is formatted, the following error message appears upon the first access to the FDD. After second access, it does not occur. "5908: An error has occurred and the message is not accessible. Contact the supplier of the application." The same error happens when PCMCIA HDDs are formatted. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09568.

The PC Card slots accept one Zoomed Video port card only in the lower slot.

These systems support PCMCIA PC cards that draw a maximum of 5 watts for PC Card slots of the system and 7 watts for PC Card slots of theThinkPad 380/385 Port Replicator.

The 6318/6321/G40 CRT is not supported because the interlace mode isn't supported at 1024 x 768 resolution.

The system audible alarm will not sound under some setup modes. It can be enabled by using the ThinkPad Features program.

In external CRT that supports only VGA resolution cannot be installed if the display mode is both LCD and CRT, because the display port always has an SVGA signal as long as the LCD screen is on.

Enabling IR on the host system during a co-sessions host session is not supported.

A suspend/resume operation during a modem application in the Windows DOS box may cause the application to hang. The modem application should be closed before entering a suspend.

A suspend/resume operation during audio recording may result in unexpected results. Audio recordings should be stopped before entering suspend.

When using the redirection feature of the Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX or HP 200LX to exchange data over an IR link at 115 Kbps, the ThinkPad 380ED should be configured as the requestor.

IRQ for Sound Blaster Pro is 5 or 7 only.

Many factors, including continuous use of the HDD or CD-ROM drive and reading long video files, will impact battery life.

The system is designed so that the customer can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card.

When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used.

PC card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended.

The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port

SUSPEND MODE OPERATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode.

When using Windows 3.11, ensure that Advanced Power Management (APM) is installed.

The system should be in either hibernation or "off" when exchanging the battery.

During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 100 mW at 12 V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60 mA at 12 V.

When using the ThinkPad 560 Port Replicator and CRT monitor, the computer output is displayed only on the LCD of the computer after suspend and resume.

The LCD screen cannot be displayed correctly after suspend/resume operation while the CRT monitor is connected to the ThinkPad 560 Port Replicator attached to a ThinkPad 380/380D system.

The IBM 3270 PCMCIA adapter cannot be used in a DOS environment.

An interlaced CRT display, for example, a G40, 6318, or 6321 display monitor in 1024 x 768 resolution, cannot be supported.

When booting up OS/2 Warp 4, a system problem may occur when displaying OS/2 Welcome message and Tutorial when there is 640 x 480 resolution with 16M color setting.

STANDARD SECURITY FEATURES

Electronic Personalization

The Electronic Personalization feature is like a name tag on yourThinkPad. Your name, contact address or phone number can be dis played on the screen when the system is turned on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system's non-volatile memory and is displayed with a password prompt.

Passwords

A Power-on Password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears:

- Each time the system is turned on
- When the system is returned to normal operation from hibernation mode

A hard disk drive (HHD) password (HDP) is used to protect HDD data. Once the HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored on the HDD, the data remains protected even if the HDD is removed to another system.

The HDP password prompt appears:

- Each time the system is turned on
- When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode

OPTIONAL SECURITY FEATURES

The user can attach a Kensington Lock to the keyhole on the side of the computer. This allows the system to be leashed to any convenient fixed point.
