Aptiva - 2144/2168 (SL-C) Diagnostics - Memory

Applicable to: World-Wide

Notes:

1. Type C-1 and Type C-2 system boards require gold-plated SIMMs.

2. SIMMs must be set in the Configuration Utility for correct parity
setting. On Type C-1 system boards, check the parity jumper setting
(J50, see "System Board Layouts--Machine Types 2144 and 2168" in
topic 5.1).

3. To operate, Type C-1 system boards must have at least one good SIMM
installed in either socket. Type C-2 system boards must have at least
one good SIMM installed in J22, and SIMMs must be installed in the
order specified in Table 5-2 in topic 5.6. See "SIMM Configurations"
in topic 5.6.

4. When removing or installing a SIMM, run the Configuration Utility (and
set the date and time) to clear any XX62 errors. See "POST Error
Codes" in topic 2.1.

- Power off the system unit.
- Ensure all SIMMs are seated correctly.
- Insert the Advanced Diagnostics diskette into drive A.
- Power on the system unit.
- Note any messages, error codes, or symptoms. Disregard 164 errors
(memory size).

| Note: Type C-1 system boards have only internal cache; replace the
| system board if cache memory is failing. Type C-2 system
| boards have pluggable cache modules; continue with these steps
| to determine whether to replace the cache memory modules or
| the system board.
|
| - Check the cache jumper settings on the system board (see "System
| Board Layouts--Machine Types 2144 and 2168" in topic 5.1).
| - Remove and replace the system board cache memory and tag address
| module by bank until the error goes away.
|
| Note: The cache bank tag address modules for Bank 1 and 2 are
| different. Make sure when replacing cache bank tag address modules
| that you replace the correct tag address module. See "Type C-2
| Cache Memory Module Upgrades" in topic 5.1.8.

size.

Note: To operate, Type C-1 system boards must have at least one good

have SIMMs installed in the order specified in Table 5-2 in
topic 5.6. See "SIMM Configurations" in topic 5.6.

- If the problem goes away, the last SIMM replaced is defective. If all
SIMMs have been replaced and the problem remains, replace the system
board.
